    Hi!

My collection is not all that large, and is mainly elite unit insignia and qualification badges, with a few others thrown in.

    Some examples:

    1. The flag with the hand above was issued to those who served in Algeria in the 1950s and early 60s. And a very nasty war that one was.

    2. 45th Engineers (lent to the French Air Force, hence the wings) 1955-1980, 1993-96

    3. UNIFIL French contingent

I was recently serving along side French forces and admired their unit insignia. A trip to Paris seeing the large variety really hooked me on French unit insignia. The US Army has similar insignia, but the heraldry of the French badges is a bit more refined.

So yes, there are other French DI collectors out here. I am very new to it though.

    Merci!

    Welcome steve!

There are enough French speakers onboard here to help out I think!

Look forward to seeing your stuff!

    Good afternoon to all!

I have collected British, Commonwealth and NATO badges since the age of 12! After 36 years in the British Army and following retirement it is only within the last 2 years that I have started collecting (seriously) French 'pocket fob' badges. French Army personnel (incl. FFL) wear generic 'cap badges' in their berets and it is the pocket badges which individually identify the unit, and 'brevets' identify that soldiers specialism - para, diver, mountain specialist, etc. A similar system to DUI's in the US Army.

At present I have over 1000 and quite a number of books (all in french) to help me identify them. I have also joined a number of French collectors societies; trouble is I speak very basic french (much to my shame) and rely on Google translate for lots .

If anyone requires any help in identifying a badge just send me an e-mail - two9546@yahoo.co.uk.

    All the best, Martyn

    Hello RNLSGC!

The Spahis are cavalry, in this case originating from the once French colonies in

North Africa. Once there were Agerian, Moroccan and Tunisian Spahis regiments,

but the only unit left is 1er R?giment de Spahis, equipped with AMX 10 RC.

The name Lyautey is simply to commemorate a French general, who was involved

in the organisation of Spahis for service in WWI. While all other French cavalry units

wear silver badges, the Spahis wear gold badges.

    Greetings/GRA

Hello GRA , Existed also the Spahis Senegalaises , from Senegal . apart the Infantry Tiralleurs .
