A few weeks ago I became aware that there was a Bavarian "Leiberring" on the market, but put it from my mind as I was sure I had no chance of getting it.

But the world is small indeed, there were apparently 3-4 guys after it, and it has landed up in the hands of a good friend... I managed to get it to study... and hope to be able to work a trade soon...

Nice little item. Is there any inscription on the inside?

    Hi,

They are numbered on the back, thats how I know this is the Ring that has been doing the rounds.

There seems to be a problem finding this guys records, but if I get it I will really pull out all the stops to find him. I am superstitious and believe if I research it in detail... i probably wont get it in the end ;-)

You will get it in the end! just keep searching and even sometimes clicking links that don't correspond to each other :D that's how I sometimes get a hit, in random places. :)

You'll get it for sure, just takes a bit of time and a lot of luck :D excellent ring btw and hope she can join your collection soon :)

    Hello Chris,

a very nice Leiberring. Were you able to find the winner, based on the number ?

The ring was awarded to soldiers of the Bavarian Infanterie Leib Regiment, for two years service at the front.

    cheers Andreas

    Hi,

If I recall correctly, I believe that this one is marked 89_ or _68 and "800" (silver content) on the inside.

A very very rare and desirable item! Congratulations Chris!

    Best regards,

    Hi,

Where did you see it? I did not know it was online already. Indeed... it was 898 or 868 depending on which side you look at it from. I wish it was 868, that would make my life easier, but seeing how another ring is stamped it is indeed 898

    Hi,

It is to "Heck" in the 6. Komp.

I have finalised "the deal" so will be the proud owner in a day or so.

Here is the problem... there is no "Heck" listed in the 6. Komp.

There was one in the 5th company, (same battalion) who was wounded and invalided out after just 1 day at the front. Technically there was a paragraph which allowed these men to get the ring as well, but in the Leiber history it said they stuck by the 24 month rule.

So... Heck remains a bit of a mstery man. There were a couple of Photos and a letter with it, but I assume added at a much later date as there is no logical connection to be seen.... If it was the 5th Company Heck he arrived at the regiment at a muuuuuch later date than the pics....

It seems the Ring Roll is actually not worth a toss....

    Leiber Heck 6. Kp. 11.01.1919 898 Leiber Meier Franz Xaver 6. Kp. 11.01.1919 899 Leiber Mittermeier 6. Kp. 11.01.1919 900 Leiber Schütz 6. Kp. 11.01.1919 901 Leiber Hörhule 6. Kp. 11.01.1919 902 Leiber Eder St. 6. Kp. 11.01.1919 903 Leiber Hihmann 6. Kp. 11.01.1919 904 Leiber Völk Johann

I tried 3 of these names Heck, Hörhule and Hihmann... all supposedly in the 6th company...

None of them is on the 6th Company roll... Hörhule and Hihmann dont exist at all in Acestry.com....

I am sure there was something similar to Heck, Hörhule and Hihmann in the 6th Company... one would need to see the ORIGINAL roll... I think the initial transcription into the Regimental History made errors which have been carried on into the Roll that is online.

I think I have it nailed.

The only logical guy this could have been would have been Johann Keck.

Keck served in the 6th Company from 1914 till the end of the war. He therefore qualified for the ring. He is however not on the Ring Roll. He should be there as he fulfills all criteria.

A "Heck" is on the roll, but not listed in the 6th company. In fact, I cannot find any Leib regiment guy named Heck who qualified, and I went through all the Heck's in the Bavarian Army.

The only stumbling block then is Keck is a Gefreiter... but seeing all the errors on the Roll, that is more of a questionmark than a "no!"

    OK, going a bit further...

    ber Heck 6. Kp. 11.01.1919 898 Leiber Meier Franz Xaver 6. Kp. 11.01.1919 899 Leiber Mittermeier 6. Kp. 11.01.1919 900 Leiber Schütz 6. Kp. 11.01.1919 901 Leiber Hörhule 6. Kp. 11.01.1919 902 Leiber Eder St. 6. Kp. 11.01.1919 903 Leiber Hihmann 6. Kp. 11.01.1919 904 Leiber Völk Johann 6. Kp. 11.01.1919 905 Leiber Reif 6. Kp. 11.01.1919 906 Leiber Wagensanner 6. Kp. 11.01.1919 907 Leiber Wirth 6. Kp. 11.01.1919 908

The Hihmann on the online list is in fact Hohmann in the Regt History list, But Wagensanner in the History list and in the online list is actually Wagensonner (Ring no 907) on his EK doc... i know as I have it.... so many errors indeed....

    Hi,

Do you have a link to the auction?

I am not sure if there is a document... I have only ever seen the ring that pictured online with the award list, the back of another one in a Photo... and this one.

I have never seen a document.

    Best

    Chris

    Hello Chris:

Unfortunately, no, I deleted the link a long time ago. I also can't remember the name of the seller. This has to be one of the most difficult to find awards ever!

    Hello once more Chris:

Some more thoughts regarding the listing of Leiberring enlisted recipients that appears on-line. When the list was transcribed from old-style printed German (from the original book), mistakes may have been made in reading the capital letters (some of them are rather difficult to read for even native Germans who are not used to reading them!). Is there anyone out there in with the original book "Die Leiber im Weltkrieg"? Spolei, do you know of anyone?

    • 2 months later...

I had another one of these in my grubby fingers this weekend,

I had wondered why, if issued in 1917 (for the first ones) how they knew to put 1918 on the bottom of the ring.

I did not have a glass with me on the weekend, but I think there was no "8" ... just a 191....

I am tending to think that maybe the botton date was added as they were awarded... maybe there are rings out there with 1917 on them.

This weekend the ring I saw was included with 5-6 other rings and simply labeled as "patriotic rings" ... the collector in question did not know what it was (had only found out the day before what it was)... which kinda supports my theory that most of these will gather dust with many folks totally ignoring them....

    Hello Chris,

I was at this exhibition on saturday and I told the collector the story of the ring.

It was ring Nr. 423. In the listings, I found the owner Georg Josef Schrott 19.3.1885.
