Swedish participation in the Napleonic war

    Recommended Posts

With Sweden's long absence from war, I'm glad I can show you guys these two commentorative pieces from the campaign i Germany 1813. The "coin" represents the Swedish Crownprince Bernadotte, who in 1818 became King Karl XIV Johan.

Nice stuff. I was recently reading a Swedes account of his part in the 1813-14 war, recommended to all Swedish readers out there: Carl Johan Ljunggren; Minnesanteckningar...

Excellent!  When I was at the the 200th anniversary of Waterloo last year there were quite a number of Swedes there, although I think someone told me he was in a 'Finnish unit' if that makes sense. I'm afraid I'm lamentable ignorant of the role played by Sweden in that war.  I had a beer with a couple of them who, of course, spoke excellent English!

[You Europeans put we North Americans to shame with your command of multiple languages. :( ]

The swedish medal "For Valour in the Field", established by king Gustav III in 1789.

There are three designs: the first one with Gustav's head, the second one with Gustav IV Adolph's monogram and the third one with the symbol of the Order of the Sword (since 1809).

    The first one:
