    SIGNVM MEMORIAE - austrian medal

    Recommended Posts

The Jubilee Medal for the 50th Anniversary of the Kaiser's reign (1848-1898), commonly called the "Signum Memoriae" medal. The good news is a replacement ribbon is easy: for military personnel it is all red. The civil version is slightly harder: half red/half white.

    Hallo Gents,

I require a little help here, I have always took it that this medal had two ribbons to denote

a Military award and a civil award, today I have heard the following,

that there are two distinct medals, the difference being in the Latin Script

and I am trying to get verification:-

    Civil: FRANC.IOS.I.D.G.IMP.AVST.REX BOH.ETC.ET REX AP.HVNG

    Military: FRANC.IOS.I.D.G.IMP.AVSTR.REX.BOH.ETC.AC.AP.REX.HVNG

    Hello Dave and Kevin,

You are speaking about two possible ribbons for the Signum Memoriae: red and half red/half white. Is this ribbon a wrong one, or is it a Hongarian issue?

    kind regards,

    Jef

    Kev,

That's correct, two different inscriptions for Military and civilian awards.

The gold version with the eagle below the ribbon was awarded to high ranking officers with an extremly long military service.

    Aufschriften:

    "Milit?r" : FRANC.IOS.I.D.G.IMP.AVSTR.REX.BOH.ETC.AC.AP.REX.HVNG.

    "Zivil" : FRANC.IOS.I.D.G.IMP.AVST.REX.BOH.ETC.ET.REX AP.HVNG.

    Hello,

actually, I don't think that the difference between the Military and the Civil "Jubil?umsmedaille 1898" is in the inscription: these are just variations in the text, between different strikings, both from the award period. The difference is in the ribbon's colour (in any case, I'll check the regulations and the Michetschl?ger).

The medal posted from Jef has a wrong, hungarian ribbon.

It's necessary to remember that it existed a further 1898 Jubilee Medal: the one awarded to Officers with more than 50 years of active service: it was in gold; with a double-eagle shaped suspension.

    Best wishes,

    Enzo

The SIGNUM MEMORIAE had been reinstituted some years ago by the late crown prince Otto von Habsburg himself on behalf of his 95th birthday:

    Dear Gentleman

Can anybody say if the medals struck in silver were for dignitaries, special puchases or simply fakes?

In books only described as being issued in bronze. Must be a mistake I suspect.

Here is my piece Jubiläums-Medaille 1898 für Zivilstaatsbedienstete

It has the inscription FRANC.IOS.I.D.G.IMP.AVST.REX.BOH.ETC.ET.REX AP.HVNG.

I wonder if we can get any new information regarding the different inscriptions as discussed in Posts #9 and #11 above... From my totally unscientific and hasty research; several images of the "Zivil" and "Militär" medal online suggest that the inscriptions are in fact different for each class (rather than different producers).

I think I have two more of these medals some place...just need to find them...

More discussion in this other GMIC thread regarding the different inscriptions... SIGNVM MEMORIAE MEDALS

Seems that there are some references for the different inscriptions for the "Zivil" and "Militär" medal

Since this is the latest topic about this medal.

Both medals are literaly the same, I am yet to get the ones that have different text on them. Left has newer type of a ribbon with a clasp [red], while the right one has older style [pink]. Not only that, but the gold patina [I assume] is so pretty.
