According to the original award doc, the pinback badge in the left breast it the correct one.

AND/OR a ribbon in the buttonhole.

That would make the Spangenstucken the non official ones.

Hmmm, could this be read/translated such that only the button-hole ribbon (as opposed to the full size award) can be worn in combination with the pinback, rather than implying that the ribboned "IInd" Class was not a legitimate award in it's own right?

What makes this one overly sexy is that the guy on the doc was actually in Brandis Unit in WW1 as a senior NCO and awarded the EK1.
