I am looking for citations and related paperwork, preferably complete groups, for active service in the 1914-18 period for the Croix de Guerre and Medaille Militaire.
Please let me know if you have anything to offer.
Many thanks,
David

David: I have yet to buy it, but I am currently negotiatiating the purchase of an artifact belonging to French WWI Ace Rene Fonck. Accompanying the artifact is a superb example of this award with as many stars and laurel branches as can cover a full-length ribbon. I have no proof that it was Fonck's, but it is the "dressing" to a far more important item that is indisputably his. Whatever the case, it's truly a beautiful example. Please email me at craig@germandaggers.com and I'll be happy to send you photos if I am lucky enough to acquire it. If you do buy it, I'll happily send a donation to this site.

Hi Craig,
It should be possible to check whether this award is Fonck's one or not... Please, as soon as you get the photos of the medal and/or doc, post some of them here.
If it is : a real nice find !!!!
Cheers.
Ch.

I am sad to report that I underestimated my competition at this local show. Quite complacently, I left the purchase until yesterday, and when I got to the show, the group had been sold. I should have pulled the trigger. As an aside, the item associated with the cross was a really neat piece - half of a german tail-dragger propeller that had been beautifully painted with a dedication to him, from the Automobile Club of America. Quite a neat piece, and I'm pissed I missed it!

I doubt if the Croix de Guerre was Fonck's award as this is in private hands here in Europe, along with some other stuff, having passed directly from the family to the collector. The cross accompanying the propellor half was probably put together for display purposes. How do you know the propellor half was Fonck's, by the way? People have been quite inventive with WW1 flying memorabilia and aircraft parts since the 1920s and particularly in the 1960s. It would be nice to see photographs of it. We could ask the Fonck family if they are familiar with it.
