    3. hi a few years back I was lucky to be able to buy the following set of medals for the 5th line kings Germany legion. both the MGSM and the waterloo medal are named to sergeant C Maxine. the Hanover star is not named and was added to the set by a collector sometime in 1908. C Maxine was in most of the large battles of the peninsula war and also at waterloo. He was discharged in August 1815 in Paris. He was 34. What things this man must of seen. if only Medals could talk. michael
    4. hi help needed. can anyone please help me out with ID of this cuirassiers armour. I don,t think they are a match as breast and back plate have odd numbers stamped on them. the letters i can make out at the bottom of the inner side of the breastplate are 2? eme laille La?geun no7224 this is what it looks like to me, the letters are on the lower right hand side as you look at them. on the lower left hand side are further letters and numbers but i can,t make them out due to rubbing. stamped on the breastplate front face is the letter H and a further stamp of the numbers 242. On the back plate are the following. 2 eme CA?LLE 1eme LA?GAIN and also what looks like ALED? CHAL then two lines with a T above then the french for august and the date as been rubbed out . can anyone help. thanks, michael also can anyone please let me know if the french made this armour in sizes, I can,t get into it at all, I am a size 46 inch chest, it fits my wife who is a size 10/12. I know that as a race we are larger but the cuirassiers got picked from the largest men in the french army and they also had a heavy uniform coat on, plus the lining of the armour, to get all that inside this armour would of made them very small men in deed. michael
    5. hi, its not just the euro, its now the weak pound. high charges set by auction houses, some around 25% on the price plus 20% vat. and the number of reproductions up for sale. I have a very small colection of items, a few muskets, carbines swords and sabres. but would love a lot more, as i am sure we all would. michael
    6. Hi Mervyn, my understanding of the date, is that it is the year and month that the item was pasted as fit for purpose, ie made and ready to go. so this item could of been made before 1814, but not after. michael
    7. hi Mervyn. At the moment the item is back at the auctioners, I like you just don,t like the look of the think, as to payment i paid 240 pounds. I will not name the action house but its a well known arms and armour name here in the UK. there was no picture and it was marked as a 17th cen NCO,s spontoon with regt markings. will apart from not being anything like a 17th cen item the only marking on the thing is the stamped letter 3, at best this is a rack number. All very sad realy, mine you repros are all over the place here in the UK, but I did hope for more from this place, michael
    8. Hi sorry the marking I am interested in is AGN not ASN. also please find better pic included in post. michael
    9. hi all, I picked up this french light cavalry M1822 sabre in a auction a few days ago, its marked Klinoethal 1833 on the blade and as a handfull of inspectors marks and rack numbers on the guard. but also stamped on the guard are the Letters ASN which i have not seen before. can anyone put some light on these marks. sorry for the poor pic,s michael
    10. Hi, I picked up this item sometime back at auction, It was an internet buy ( not ebay) and on first seeing the item it did not look right to me. the staff is new, which was not stated on the auction site, but leaving that out for the time being what do you chaps think of the metal work. the head is made up of 4 parts. the blade, the crossarms and the staff fittings and a metal washer. on taking the head apart i could nto see any sign of dirt, wear or useage. one of the arms is stamped with the number 3. there are no other marks. the round metal washer has a square stamped hole and is split from this. The blade is bright with just a little pitting as can be seen from the pictures.I don,t know it just feels wrong to me, or am i just being put off by the staff being plastic varnished and looking like a bush handle. look at the pictures what do you think. michael
    11. hi. I have a french briquet dated 1814. on the rear edge of the blade. along with the date is the Du Kilinoenthal name engraved with a few words in front i can,t make out.following on from the Du Kilnoenthal name is the Juillet 1814 date. Also on the flat of blade are stamped the letters L, B and one i can,t make out. and on the handle are also to be found the letters B with a little mark on top. a normal B and then FT and a further mark which looks like a capital I but is not, all the stamps are made with the little round stamps used by inspectors. the number 200 is also to be found on the handle guard. I also have a later briquet of the same design, this one however is not so well made, a bit thiner in the handle, lighter then the marked briquet and with a slightly thiner blade. there are no markings on the blade at all, and just a small stamp on the guard which looks like a B. It is not so nice to handle as the napoleonic item and i think is later in date. yuou can see both in the pics below, sorry for the poor images. michael the 1814 item is on the top of the pair in the picture.
    12. hi all, I have this Paget Carbine I picked up sometime back. You can just make out the sticker on the stock with the word WATERLOO printed on it. I have been told that stickers like this one got used at the first Waterloo museum set up by sgt maj cotton, just after the battle. I did have a book years ago with some black and white pictures of cotton and his museum but it went missing during a house move. If only these items could talk, what tales they could or could not tell michael
