Italian VIC Lorioli types are four... ;-)
I was only aware of three. Can someone post a comparison of the four types?

Gah, that was a Type 1 going for less than $1000 US, and someone beat me to it while I was trying to find a workaround for not having a Brazilian address to ship to.

What's going on with this medal?

The obverse looks more or less normal, but the reverse is bizarre. Just a really poor repro?

Gah. I had looked through the Michels book and found it to be indistinguishable from an unofficial type 2, but you're right in that the reverse appears to be the same misstrike as the one you have here. At $75, it did not set me back nearly as much as a typical Cuban medal would, but maybe I'll still see if I can get it returned. I have over 40 vics now, and this seems to be the first time I've been fooled.

Thanks Lambert, what makes you say that?

Thoughts on this medal? As there is no maker's mark on the rim or designers name on the obverse, I believe this is identified in the Michels book as an unofficial type 2. I looked under a magnifying glass and confirmed the mark to the right of Victory's feet is a scratch, not a name. Also, note that the reverse appears to be a misstrike.

I haven't seen any descriptions anywhere of an American medal with numbers stamped on the front. I'm wondering if I've maybe stumbled across some previously unknown type.

Does anyone have thoughts on where the stamp could have come from in the picture two posts up?

It appears to be stamped. You can see it just to the right of victory's feet.

Yeah, I'm thinking that's what it might be, though the silver one in his book looks darker. Does anyone know if that variant is a different metal or if it is just colored to look silver?

I believe I have a rarity here, the Michels "unknown type." As you can see, it is silver, though apparently bronze underneath. It looks old enough not to be a modern repro, and I have looked under a magnifying glass and can see no trace of the designer's name in the usual place. It also has no markings on the rim. Thoughts?

Thanks Rob, I'm continuing to look. I actually found one on eMedals once, but waited a few months because I didn't feel like paying for it and was pretty sure it would still be there. I decided to buy it one day and it was still available, but when I tried about half an hour later, someone had snatched it up. Learned a valuable lesson that day.

Can someone describe what updates there are in the 2016 version of johnnymac's book? I'm considering trying to find one, but don't want to drop $60 on it if it's only updates on the American clasps, as I have not taken to collecting those.

I don't pitch it quite like that, because I don't plan to eventually sell it at a higher price. But it's an appreciating asset, in the sense that it is only like to go up in value with time, which means that it can always be sold if we fall on hard times. Buying collectibles doesn't actually decrease one's net worth. But like you said, that's probably what I say to convince myself as much as it is to convince her. :-)

What about the folds on the pants, which are more pronounced than in pictures of officials that I've seen? Also the earring, which looks bigger than pictures I've seen. I'm trying to be diligent, because I'm thinking of making this a tax return present to myself, and it's a lot of money to drop on a fake.
Nevermind. On closer inspection and with help from older posts with good pictures in this thread, I satisfied myself that it is the real deal and not, as initially suspected, the type 3 repro. I took the leap (after convincing my incredulous wife that it wasn't such a terrible idea because it won't lose its value) and now have it on layaway.

Anyone have thoughts on if this is a genuine official Siamese vic? It looks pretty legit to me.
I was taking a closer look at this one, and decided that it doesn't look official to me. It looks more like the repro type 3 in the Michels book because of the thicker fingers and size of the earring. Thoughts?

It seems like the few times I've seen one, it's been about that price. What would you say is typical?

Thanks Rob, I actually do have an example of the Type 4, and three variants of the Lorioli variety. Macchianera seemed to indicate there was a 4th Lorioli variant, which I was unaware of.
