Yes you are right about artillery equipments and I suspect only period photos will confirm any MG use. I am working on the principle that in the early days of MG long range, direct and indirect fire, like the British MG users, the only items available were field artillery instruments. As we know the MGC mastered indirect fire long before the Imperial Germans did but there are some German specialized MG kit items, like your lovely cased long arm protractor. I sent him a picture once to help out a waf (yuk!) member not only did he get back prompt he took time out to confer with a fellow collector to make sure the info was correct. The box kit blast! its not the same as I have a picture of I'd rather not post without permission.....oh well uumm dunno its unusual for Jerry to just stamp a box 'tools' isn't it? . btw does your fold have that tiny spanner still there? the little blighter I've never figured out what its for,,, pictured in Dolphs book showing the tools. I still believe it to be 100% German and for the MG08. You are right that most boxes seem to be marked for the MG08 or MG08/15, but this is a very early box. So for example in 1914 there was only one MG - so no need to mark otherwise! I have seen one image of a similar box that contained 2 locks, with the same marking on the lid. This appears to be a very very small spanner and small items are the last thing any soldier in any period has in field equipment. As you say what function it serves is a good question. Speaking of firing pins I once approached a specialist machine shop we used in car racing if they could make me some pins and gave them an example to study draw up etc.They could $320 each on a run of fifty, including hardening of course! the price would come down if I ordered more than a hundred!!
