    British Serviceman awarded Bronze Star

    Recommended Posts

Dave, its all politics at the end of the day. Another example is all the Gold Sovereigns that we part of the gold reserves of GB, where melted down and sold for there gold value, when the value of the coins themselves would have been more, due to rarity, etc. Whose ideas was that!!!!!!

Above is a list of the next lots for auction again, there seems to be no continuity in the prices or am I missing something?

Its like the Bronze Star to the Maj K.I.A in Korea & to the Brig Gen, if these were MC`s they`d got for ?1000`s!!!?????

    :( CONFUSED :(

I assume that in the US they have an official naming system like in the UK, or can you just buy a BS and get in named in any jewellers? EEEKKKK, this leaves a naste taste in the mouth, if this is the case then it shouldn`t be long before Patton`s medals appear on the market, or am I just being paranoid???

Another thing, thats just occurred to me, would I be right in thinking that a modern issued named would be worth less than say a WW2 unamed because of the quality??

I recently bought a modern issue Silver Star, WW2 Bronze Star, and a Purple Heart in box of issue all unamed for ?25, did I get a good deal? :(

Also Iraq, National Guard, Army Commendation & Bosnia medals all unamed for for ?5 each? Is this the going rate?

Repeat after me -- "All US medals are junk, especially the named/numbered ones. For proper disposal, they should be sent immediately to PO Box...."

US medals, like British medals, require a little study. We continue to pull data out of the official records and make them more easily researched.

Once you've seen some properly named/numbered pieces, you start to recognize the good, bad and ugly. One you recognize brooch styles and naming/numbering styles, you have a good start. John Strandberg's book "Call of Duty" has good photos of original strike US medals and the photos are worth the price of the book.

As for differences in values of named pieces, there are collector "hot items", such as Marines, airborne units, pilots, POWs, and hot areas, such as Civil War, Spanish-American War, etc. The story sells the medal.

In reality, quality US medals are undervalued when compared to British equivalent awards. However, the different polocies of awarding decorations accounts for far greater numbers of US awards and that depresses thei market values somewhat. I have a group with a DSC/Silver Star/ 8 DFC/20 Air Medals to a 13 victory ace (33 victories before they disallowed ground kills). The rough equivalent would be an RAF Fighter Command DSO/DFC and 2 bars. I paid $2550 for mine, what would the Fighter Commend equivalent go for?
