    hiya mike,

this thread prolly belongs over on the imperial section.

    anyways!

a similar volunteer medical cross was first issued during the 1870/71 war with france. that version is devoid of a crown un the upper arm of the cross, and had straight angled arms. there was an 1870/71 bar for it.

your version was instituted in 1901 and can be found alone (like yours), with a '1914' bar, and with the silver crown and the '1914' bar.

so i guess there were three grades.

the version with both the bar and crown is very rare.

while the bar and crown are rare,

when buying - do make certain

that the bar and crown were issued

and are not upgrades by the

    frankenstein medal bar folks

I was offered one once that

used a Belgian crown and when

I pointed this out, I was told it was

    a very <g> rare variation
