Hi - Kevin. A very worthwhile exercise and most interesting to see the variations in prices. I think the number of collectors is fairly limited and some are prepared to pay much more than others. I must admit that I 'hate' ebay with a passion - the shop has it's own registration - cathay@africa1 - but I stopped putting on some years ago. Perhaps I need to re-think that attitude having seen your comparisons ? I have cupboards full of old police equipment - although the truncheons and tipstaffs are now reserved and most of the lapel badges have gone. Do you keep a record of any other police equipment that comes-up ? Mervyn

Roll of Honour for the Metropolitan SC, F Division Sub C, Nottinghill.

Here is an item that came in a short while ago and has been in the mailing tube ever since. It is quite fragile and the first photo is not very good but I don't want to unroll it again until it is ready to be framed. The rest of the photos are quite clear and the whole document is shown in sections.

There is a date on the bottom left hand corner of 1917 in conjunction with a Sub Inspector's name but because it shows the 1918 Long Service Medal on the left hand border I believe this was printed after the Great War. To my knowledge these were pretty well always printed after the War. In some cases the rank is given and in some other cases the regimant they served in is listed. It would be a monumental task to research all of these soldiers and one that may have to wait until I retire so I can find the time.

I hope you like it and perhaps will be of intertest to some collectors as far as the names for research purposes.

    Regards

    Brian

My last photo is the right hand lower side.

I'll post a better photo of the whole Honour Roll after I get it framed, as I said I don't want to keep rolling and unrolling it.

I hope you liked this artifact.

    Regards

A fascinating document, Brian - and as you say well worth framing and preserving. I was amazed at the ranks obtained, and also, the variety of units they served-in. Royal Flying Corps and the , rarer, Royal Naval Air Service are shown. The only question puzzling me is if they were Specials - when did they find the time for this full time military service ? Are there any other dates shown ?

    Hi Mervyn,

No dates of service are shown. I wondered about this myself and made the assumption that they must have decided to leave the Police Service for the military sometime after the start of the war. From the photo that I posted a while back of the group of "Specials" it looks like some were very young when they joined the Police Sevice as an SC so would it be possible that they joined the Police Service and then when they "came of age" they joined the military?

    Regards

    Brian

    Hello Mervyn,

Nice to hear from you. No, I only collate data relating to SCs with the exception of Bradford City Police which is my other main area of interest.

I will keep posting when I get the chance. I'm sure that you are right about the limited number of SC collectors and the effect that it has on prices.

Although on rare occasions I am sure that lunacy overtakes people! Another manifestation is what I call the 'sunday effect'. On that day items generally attract prices considerably higher than on other days.

    Kindest regards,

    Kevin
