    Western Command was formed in 1939, with HQ at Chester.

    Its area of responsibility included the whole of Wales and bordering North Western & North Midland English counties - the counties of Cumberland, Westmoreland, Lancashire, Staffordshire, Shropshire, Herefordshire, Cheshire, & Gloucestershire.

    The formation sign consisted of the yellow cross of St Davidbearing the red rose of Lancaster within a red circle, the whole set on a black square - red & black being the colours of Army HQ's.
