    looks minty.

When I compare SB prices (remember... 2000 of them) vs. Soyombo (e.g. 10k on collect russia, low number of only 400 or so) and am assuming that SB prices are "appropriate" (after all, we can track over last 2-3 years the gradual increase), I'm left thinking that Soyombo's will soon rocket to well over 20k. Don't even want to start thinking about what a regular Hero Star will go for...

I don't know about those Soyombo prices though Bob.. That one on collectrussia hasn't gone anywhere in a month or so and with the current financial issues who knows.

There has to be a limit to what people will pay for these things, Rare they are, but how many dedicated Mongolian collectors are out there?

    A handfull perhaps

Makes me getting one seem less likely though!!

    Cheers

Perhaps, but this is the 3rd one he has (i think) in 12 months time... prices are jacked up almost 100% each time and after a few months they do sell.

May be very few Mongolia collectors... but there's also not that much material to collect of course! :) Plus I do suspect Mongolia is a natural fringe area of collecting for Soviet collectors of which there are many. Also, the potential "price explosion" from research hasn't even materialized yet. One wonders also how many of the collectors for these high end items are so affected by the financial crisis that it really impacts their spending pattern...

I'm not so sure ther will be a price explosion from research, seeing almost 95% or more are "just" long service awards.

For most collectors here on the forum, that doesn't change anything but for most other collectors there needs to be some blood leaking out of the citation, before they will dive into their wallets.

I guess "wait and see" is the only thing we can do.

Prices are rising as is... so I'd be surprised if research doesn't add to that. Soviet awards also aren't all for snipers in stalingrad who escaped via a submarine etc. etc. so I'm not going to be too picky... research is better than no research:)

Basic economics. ECON 101, as I distantly recall. Supply and demand. Very limited supply. Demand? Maybe, depending on where we stand relative to 1929. Add to this the material composition of percious metals.

When research comes, it will reveal one of several things:

-- Award to a well-known individual for historical services (e.g., Choibalsan). Obviously not many.

-- Awards paried with a hero star (military or labor).

-- Awards for gallantrrey (or some such). I sincerely doubt there were many.

-- Awards for some mix of meritorious and long service. These will come in both "military" and "civil" sub-types (and all degrees in between). Some (like many on this forum) will always denigrate civil awards.

-- Simple ("simple"?) long-service awards, both military and civil. (As above)

-- Unawarded "dump" from the State bank.

Add to this the dimensions of (1) is in it a group? and (2) is it documented? and (3) both? And I get confused.

For those fixated on (market) "value": Supply and demand. As my ECON 101 profdessor said long years ago, in a galaxy far, far away: "Any damned thing is 'worth' only what some damned fool is willing to pay for it on any given day." If, however, your sense of value runs to the virture or restoring history and content to a tedious -- even if pretty -- chunk of gold and platinum and enamel . . . well, then, you are my sort of person. It will be for my "heirs and assigns" to contend with "market value".

Market Value is of interest to me for one reason and one reason only.

It determines what I can and can't buy.

I don't sell anything anyway, just can't bring myself to do it..

Can't wait 'till I get a job

In that sense, JC, 'market value' screws us all. Ouch!

Unfortunately, the November 2008 San Georgio auction Sukhbaatar had neither the attachment style nor the number listed (I think, I cannot read Italian, and I think this hurt the sale), but it went at EUR 1700 (around $2129) -- plus fees.
