Yes. The lowest recorded pinback is still 813 (with 788 the screwback high, so we have a narrow "window).

ah missed the 813... indeed a narrow window... production run of 800? one day...

Just when you think SB's have dried up, new ones pop up. Check out the Mongolian section of Dmitry Markov's upcoming auction (the prices of some badges are shall we say rather "high" by the way!!!)!

Judging from last Markov's auction majority of items will end up in Russia / Ukraine. On last auction few buyers bought majority of interesting items.

Prices that they paid were beyond of what most of western collectors were prepared to pay, I wouldn't be surprised if this will be the case this time around.

That was my sense as well, William. I was able to speak with him only briefly at OMSA, but I got the clear sense that he (even more so than the other NYC-area dealers) was mainly focusing on doing business back to The Motherland these days.

Not sure any of us can "run with these big dogs".

During the last auction representatives of the "big dogs" were seen bidding like crazy. It seemed the price didn't matter at all, like there was no limit for these people.

The goal was to buy at any cost... how can you compete against something like this?

Yes, I have seen similar Russian bidders at some of the London auctions. Just walk in, hold up their placard, unmoving, until the hammer falls, and then walk out.

This also explains perhaps why the auction catalogue is more than Dmitry Markov posts on his site. Why offer an SB for sale at say 2.5K if you know that there'll be people bidding it up well over a reasonable market price anyway?

Interesting... the same SB's appear to "circulate": 1.246 twice in below list, 1.514 twice in below list, 644 twice in below list!

    Now, this is interesting...

Here's a scan... we all know ORDER OF SUKHEBATOR #5168 should not exist... at least not in the near future and certainly not in the late 80's.

Sad. It looks like the name of the decoration has been removed and replaced. :banger:

Yes, judging by the serial number / date, order of red banner of labor would seem possible.

Somebody thought: let's make some more money... and as a result the history will be lost and any reasonably knowledgable collector will not touch this booklet.

Based on Bob's logs seller on eBay has been selling SB for three months and now he increases the price.

I also love his accepted payment methods - cash, bank transfer or Western Union to China... :shame:

    William

I wouldn't be too concerned. I acquired a Soyombo Hero award from him quite some time ago (for a fabulous price; even more so considering current market price!) and I paid via Western Union and the item arrived in perfect condition.

Still, increasing the price is an interesting action to take... I do have the impression it's a sellers market and Igor knows this as well in New Jersey. Self fullfilling prophecy:

    - he sets high prices

    - suppliers in Mongolia also expect high prices

    - as a result, prices HAVE to be high in west again

    - etc.

Unfortunately, many of the secondary suppliers in Ulanbaatar look to Igor's site to set THEIR prices (I have been shown nice color printouts from his site to justify their silly prices, and none of these guys routinely trade internationally except at the weekly UB coin fair, to the boys who've come down from Irkutsk), add two more steps and . . . .

Just wait to see where the ones at Markov's auction go . . . anyone care to guess?

Knowing him personally helps and his reputation is top.

I am going to stop by for auction preview. I'll ask Dmitry for his opinion, but I doubt he can predict.
