Johann saw active service in Poland in 1939, France in 1940 and the Central Eastern Front 1941/42. Johann was wounded twice the first time being on 05/02/1942 near Akatova to the east of Gshatsk and the second time on 03/09/1942 near Upolosy also to the east of Gshatsk whilst his Battalion was detached and under the command of 461st Infanterie-Regiment in the same Division. This latter wounding was sufficiently serious to ensure he never saw active service again in WW II. On his recovery he was posted Gen.Komp.Grenadier-Ersatz-Bataillon 7 and training and replacement unit , until the end of the war which he survived.
