Religious Motif WWI Post Cards - Gott mit Uns!

    Recommended Posts

Serbian and Bulgarian soldiers stopped hostilities, left the trenches and met on the no man's land where they wished a Happy Eater to each other and exchanged food and tobacco. This happened during Great War - 1917, and there is a description of this event in the book "Serbian Trilogy" by Stevan Jakovljević (orig. title "Српска трилогија" Стеван Јаковљевић).

The former Yugoslavia comes to mind........

No to go any further in that direction I just want to point out that you have to bear in mind that this is a very specific region where a strong connection between religion and national identity exists.

Gee, sounds like the place my forebears came from: Northern Ireland! But, no, lets not go down that road except to note, perhaps, that in an age when most people actually took religion seriously it was inevitable, I think, that God and religion would get co-opted for political ends. We won't even go to the Crusades! :banger:
