What can be said? This is a wonderful post and well worth pinning so that is is not shuffled down the list of posts too soon.

Many thanks for taking the time to post this interesting material.

Thank you for this terrific presentation, Mervyn. Such an interesting story, and such a wealth of documents and accoutrements to help bring it to life.

Col. Whitaker's past equipment - with medals, research,Plaque, sword and swagger stick is one of the most complete

that I have come across for a WW2 South African Air Force Officer. Whilst the fittings for the Ceremonial Helmet

were included, unfortunately the helmet was not.

With great good fortune - and help from friends, I have managed to locate a helmet. A rare piece . I can now show

the helmet as it would have appeared on Parade. The finial is a 'Winged Springbok' - now, long changed.

I will start with a photo of the Helmet and the Medals and Death Plaque.

This is a stunning group Mervyn and one worthy of the time you have spent on providing us with the insights and photos.

Having seen it first - hand it looks even better in the "flesh"

Rory
