Just posting a few pictures of The Absent Minded Beggar Plaque, A Gentleman in Kharki……

A silver plaque sized 11 ½ Inch by 7 ½ Inch, mounted on a 11 ¼ Inch by 15 Inch Oak board…..

High relief figure of the Daily Mail – Absent Minded Beggar…..

Impressed in plague under left foot: “A Gentleman in Kharki”

Bronze Plaque on bottom heavy engraved “PRESENTED BY THE BOROUGH OF REIGATE – IN RECOGNITION OF LOYAL SERVICES – IN THE SOUTH AFRICAN 1900 – 01,” 4 inch by ½ inch…..

Makers name on reverse: D. George Collins, Manufacturing Silversmiths, 116 Newgate Street, London…..

There were many cloth souvenirs made with the synbol and wording from Kipling's Absent minded beggar.

I think it was the Daily Mail that offered them to readers. Mervyn

You will find a lot of items from the Boer War era with the figure of the Absent Minded Beggar on them.....

He was the Boer Wars version of Tommy, Old Bill and GI Joe.....

Just a few samples.....

Yes I have the medal but no box and many medals to soldiers in south africa during the boer war. I just need to catalog them so I know what i have. Thou it has nothing to do with this subject directly I thought i might stick my swagger stick I got some time ago. I need someone with better eyes than me to read it. hope you find this a little interesting . best,Ray

Hello Mike, yea you have a few about 4 to 5 times what I have but I do believe this is a disease and I have caught it completely . Someday I will post my collection,once I have it sorted.Best,Ray

Ray - rephotograph the swagger stick and try to get it in focus - I couldn't make anything out -
