I know some French bayonets were taken to Germany during the First War, but I believe they were overstruck with German markings.

The hilt has been modified. The photo shows an un-modified hilt.

Could it have been modified for a German rifle? As an Ersatz Bayonet?

Quite possibly. Would like to see the other side of the hilt to see if any other alterations were made - especially to the press catch.
