French 1847 bayonet?

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Is this a French 1847 bayonet and can anyone shed some light on the markings shown in the attached photos? Perhaps they’re just acceptance marks.

Thanks for any help.

Edit: don't know why the markings have come out sideways but it shows LJ and a B underneath. Another has HL with what looks like a crown underneath.

Not my field at all, but apparently Steyr of Austria produced 200,000 Gras bayonets for the French Army, so my guess is that the 'B' indicates 'Bayonne' [ie: French made] and LJ the initials of the company.  But just a WAG. :)

Thanks Peter, that's more than I knew before and sounds plausible.
