British Waterloo Medal

Recommended Posts

Should a British Waterloo Medal awarded to a member of the 1st Foot Guards be engraved as such or should it be labeled as to the Grenadier Guards? Thanks in advance.

As the former.

Thanks Paul. I thought as much. I have a chance to purchase one but it is impressed ‘Grenadier Guards’. Your thoughts?

Thanks Paul. I did do a Google image search for ‘Waterloo Medal 1st Foot Guards’ and the ones I found all Grenadier Guards in some form, not 1st Foot Guards. I was surprised. But as I understand it, this regiment was given the title Grenadier Guards in 1815 after Waterloo. When was the medal issued in 1815 vis a vis the regiments new honor?

If it is correct the unit part will be impressed exactly as "2nd Batt. Grenad. Guards." or "3rd Batt. Grenad. Guards."

At the time of the battle the two battalions present of the "Grenadier Guards" were known officially as the 2nd & 3rd Battalions, 1st Foot Guards. Then by the time the medal was issued the medals were all impressed with their new title of Grenadier Guards.
