Because the Korean characters on the obverse can be translated to this meaning. Its dark brown in reality.I just dived in and bought my first NK award as well. Did this (of all places) in minsk. National Order of Flag 2nd class, soviet screwback, number in 5K range... WITH a booklet... including a photograph... awarded to a (Bela)russian (he certainly doesn't look North Korean) in 1957.Will post pics when I am back home. Also, striking is that the entire country is now virtually paved... the road network (I am here by car... Brussels-Vilnius-Polatsk-Vitsebsk-Minsk-Brest (tomorrow)-Hrodna and than back home again).I liked Minsk a lot last time as well... there are people that can't stand it because it's so modern (due to WW2) but I rather like the fact that it's so spaciously set up with parks, wide roads, river and of course that beautiful Stalinist architecture on the main artery through the city:)I'm afraid - for nostalgic people like me - it's going to be harder and harder to travel to countries and have a bit of an old fashioned Soviet experience.Interestingly enough, I have yet to see 1 single Soviet award for sale... saw some (extremely overpriced) Mongolian awards for sale and also some pre-socialist russian awards but nothing soviet at all (besides some pins and stuff). Anything numbered must have (or once have had) a roll somewhere. Finding it is the trick. And the greater trick would be to go beyond a one-liner ("Xxxxx 1234 was awarded on 5 March 1965 to Xxxxx Xxxxx") to a full (Soviet-style) recommendation and personnel file. Only Soviet collectors enjoy (enjoyed?) this documentary richness. But a one-liner would be better than nothing. Assuming the DPRK did as others (USSR and MPR) did and awarded their high awards for mere survival over time, it would help to sort out real awards for doing something real from the mass of other awards for simply "stayin' alive" (sounds of John Travolta). I am in touch with somebody with access to the right local authorities. It would go into too much detail right here right now to explain further.
