Lovely grouping Francois to a 20 victory confirmed ace :love: i'm suitably jealous

During the period he was awarded his EKI and FFS the staffel was based at Petsamo (now Pechenga and in Russia) flying escort missions for bombers and stukas attacking Murmansk and in particualr the Murmansk railway which was so vital for transfering the supplies brought in on the arctic convoys.

The date of his EKI, 17 February 1942, is significant as it was on that day he claimed his 3rd and 4th air victories. A group of 4 Bf109 escorted 6 Ju87 on an attack against the Murmansk railway and were intercepted by 6 Soviet Hurricanes. The Russians lost 4 aircraft and the Germans 1 stuka.

If you don't already have it you ought to get a copy of Eric Mombeek's "Eismeerj?ger: Band 2" There's several photos of Hammel in cluding one taken on the day of the award of his EKII and a good account of his first victory, a lockheed Hudson shot down of the Southern Norwegian coast on the 30th Aug.41. It appears he was also a friend of Heinrich Ehrler who was also a leutnant in the 4 staffel in 1942.

    Hello Fran?ois,

Thanks you for posting up the docs.

Is it possible that you could post up career details for Hammel, I'm interested in what units he served with during 1943, in particular on what date he was posted to 8./JG 27. Can you confirm he was St.Kap. 8./JG 27 between 13/8/43-5/44.

    Regards

    Andy

    Hello,

interesting thread which I found through the Aviation History Society Norway Forum, thanks Simon.

So I have an interest in Kurt Hammel, I visited him twice and corresponded with him too. More details are in my book "Die J?ger der Graf Zeppelin" which is in German as its title suggests.

I too copied photos from his albums and I think I know who has the rest.
