    Recommended Posts

    Hello Gents,

Well i ahve fallen in love with Victorian and Edwardian medals...and the research that comes with each peice...

So far i have been reasonabley lucky....

    Here is one beauty;

A QSA to a Casualty of the Scottish Horse

Severely wounded at Brakenlaagte 30/10/1901 whilst serving with the 2nd Scotttish Horse

    Shg.STH ( shoeing Smith) W.Bain

And another QSA with no clasps to a chap who was in WW1 and was killed/Died in Mesopotamia 14/7/15

aged 39 years leaving behind a Wife and kids. a Joseph. William.Francis. Warren

Was entitled to the following bars to the QSA

    TALANA

    DEFENSE OF LADYSMITH

    OFS

    LAINGS NEK

    BELFAST

Also was entitled to the 1915 Star, BWM and Victory medals also the KSA

Would love to re-unite his medals...However being a realist..it may never happen so am happy with the one link to his past..

    Enjoy!

    Cheers

    Paul

and here we have a couple of Volunteer Long service medals

One a Victorian and one an Edwardian

the Edwardian medal is named to

    2803 C.SJT:W.GARDENER 17/MIDDX:V.R.C

It even still has the silver mounting brooch on it..so must have been a single entitlement.

The Victorian one is mint but un-named.

    Hi Michael,

    His number, well it was

    9056

    Regards

    Paul

The one and the same. Congratulations! This would have been the heavy fighting at Ben Nevis. So you can add a 1939-45 Star, Burma Star, War Medal, and probably and India Service Medal, since the 1/16th were on the Frontier until August 1942, the last regular Indian battalion to leave.

    Naik Allah Dad

    Is this him? the casualty??

    How did you find out??

    Peter knows!

Try the Commonwealth War Graves Commission's website The Debt of Honour

For Indian names, enter the whole name as a surname (spaces between each name).

    Thanks Michael,

    you are amazing!

So My Sepoy was Fighting in India Ben Nevis?? is this a place or battle?

He was killed in action 28/05/1944 where?

How do you know where he served? like Burma etc...

Would his other medals have been named?? or just this IGS?

If i were to assemble his entitlement...where would the iGS sit? at the front or back of the bar?

Great stuff! thats the 3rd casualty medal i have picked up in the last couple of weeks! and unknowingly too! i am pleased indeedly!

Thankyou again for your invaluable help here Michael, a tip of the hat to you!

    Regards

    Paul

As a Muslim, Allah Dad's medals would probably have been issued by Pakistan. I am not sure how they treated WWII KIAs with regard to medal entitlement. Without references, I cannot remember -- all those mental swiss-cheese holes -- which side the 1/16th went, Pakistan or India.

If, as I suspect, his WWII medals would have been issued (if they ever were issued) by Pakistan, then they'd be unnamed as all other Pakistani WWII medals were. Unlike India, Pakistan followed British fashion and issued these awards unnamed. Thios opens up tremendous range for the assembly-line faking of Pakistani "groups": take a Pakistan Medal and IGS 36 pair, stuff in unnamed WWII stars (available by the kilo in Rawalpindi), and SHAZAAM a "group"!

If I had my copy of Gaylor here, on the road, with me, I'd be able to detail the service and destination of the 1/16th, though that does not guarantee that Allah Dad did all his regiment did. But Michael has already summarised this for you.

Also, I should soon be able to check the casualty register, which often gives more details on KIAs.

    Nice one.

This extract gives a bit of history and a good feel for the confused nature of the fighting. An Imphal casualty is one to be treasured.

Allah Dad was from Jhelum, in the north of Punjab province in Pakistan. As I recall, the 16th Punjab went to Pakistan on partition, so definitely his medals would not have been named. War medals are chronological, so the 1936 IGS would head the group.

Better thee than me, Paul, I think I could slip into that one very easily! :P;):o

I've been pretty much out of Indian since 1987 (although I did buy a Videsh Seva Medal for the Congo to the Gorkhas), but I feel myself being drawn back into it, especially with all those lovely groups that Ed keeps posting.

    Michael,

thankyou for the extract..very interesting reading.. :jumping:

Ed, thanks for looking up the info in the KIA records...Looking forward to hearing what you discover...

So being a pakistani punjab, we can safely assume his entitlement for WWII would be un-named.

I may just assemble his entitlement to honour this fallen soldier.

I hope the Gents will think that doing this is ok :P

Yes Michael, Ed has some lovely groups indeed!

I just love the reseach ability of these named medals...

Thanks again Michael and Ed for all your help!

    Regards

    Paul

    Gents....Behold!!!

    the bar is assembled finally!

Doesn't it look great! and a fitting tribute to a brave Sepoy who died fighting for his country in Burma.

Also attached is his Memoriam from the Commonwealth War Graves site.

    Enjoy!
