What's started bugging me is that the information is available... just all over the place.

People want to continue to maintain their own lists (redundancy as well?) but nevertheless why not have 1 central "checkin" thread so all people can benefit from the availability of the information.

One central checking place is fine, but then all the info has to be there, such as names, also in the other list we have names and dates, but alas no numbers for quite a lot of SB winners, don't discard this information. It is very valuable also, but we should not have it in another list because it doesn't fit in the "One central checking list", because then we are still working with several references.

I do agree with Ed the above list is not very easy to read, I would propose to use abbreviations for the names of the orders, SB for Sukhbaatar, OPS for Orderr of the Polar Star, etc...

Moreover more consistancy is needed in the Typology, "Type 1970" should be avoided and be called for example Type 1.2 or Type 2.1.

I propose to recap in the first post the names and type variations as a reference for the info in the following posts, that way we don't have to repeat each time: "seperately soldered loop, ..." which doesn't make the list any clearer.

Also using seperate posts for each order might be a good idea.

I think we need to go towards an excel file and attach it (regularly updated - e.g. monthly) to this post. Anything missing if following columns used:

- Award

- Type / Variation

- Number

- Awardee

- Award date

If one of the above aspects (e.g. number of the award, or name) is unkown then that cell is left blank. Slowly it will become a full database in an easily usable format as opposed to word documents. The key is also making it continuously publically available as only then will people feel a motivation to provide update information. We can split this if needed to divide the work of maintenance (e.g. 1 focus on certain orders, 1 focus on medals, etc.) but having multiple lists or info spread all over the place serves no benefit.

At the risk of working at cross purposes, here is my latest revision of my checklist, which Jan and I have bounced back and forth, both in person and by e-mail. This has also been discussed in person with Dr. Battushig and others in Ulanbaatar.

A few cautions:

1- This is a work in progress - help, please!

2- Mongolian names are not up to date, but I'm too jet-lagged to fire up Mongolian Cyrillic fonts just now.

3- I have grave doubts that all these varieties really are varieties. They may just be variation in the manufacturing process, different batches of enamel (especially on things like the Mother Heroine awards), variability in where the engraver of the day chose to put the serial number, etc. In some cases, where there are islands inside known serial number ranges, I am sorely tempted to collapse these variations, but have kept them separate for the time being. Until we know more, we just don't know enough. (Should we have that printed onto a forum t-shirt?)

4- It goes without saying that the "Polar Star" makes less and less sense. As the most commonly awarded order, we are facing the question of what was done when old varieties were turned in for new ones.

5- Some additional items will probably need to be added, but I think it may be long enough already.

The question of date ranges is, for my money, still open and evolving, and is another question, related but separate. Though what Bob and Jan have done and are doing may be getting us closer to some answers. Right now, we just need award booklets by the meter.

I think a next step for me is to get a good book on Mongolian history and try to figure out any possible military events (i.e. substantial border clashes) which may be tied with possible surges in military awardings at certain time. All speculation of course... but there are more areas (like the 21/10/1979 Virgin Lands "blitz") where surges of awardings have occured and there MUST be good reasons for that:)

You are probably correct. I am getting my entire collection out today anyway to reorganize and will check (in my list I also have a column with name of person / source so it's somewhere in my collection I am sure).

I've come to the conclusion I temporarily need to buy more pairs of shoes and less medals as shoe boxes are my main storage devices... have just completed a seperate Albania shoebox, now a Soviet one and subsequently 2 Mongolian ones. Also good against burglers... who'd think of looking in a potentially very smelly shoe box?
