    1. The Naval armband with crown between the N P is also used in the Royal Navy, it stands for Naval Provost and in my opinion is no way related to this cap. As for the Newfoundland Police they have been called the Newfoundland Constabulary or latterly the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary for some time prior to this cap being made so NC as opposed to NP is more likely for them.
    2. Is this CD for sale or is it at a nominal cost price? If this is a commercial sale please post in the sales site.
    3. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8328282.stm A fascinating insight into De Gaulle's attitude towards the allies.
    4. Dave Some interesting observations there, missed this first time around.
    5. Wow did you see what this fetched at auction today (Trafalgar day) ? Are you sitting down.... it was estimated to sell for £15,000 ($24,900) It sold for £384,000 ($637,440) !!!!!! :speechless1:
    6. Oh for a a spare £15,000 http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/edinburgh_and_east/8297418.stm
    7. I am not sure the R.V. it stands for Rifle Volunteers as I thought such units were properly designated Volunteer Rifles
    8. Mike No need to stray too far GMIC can answer many of your questions. There are four Patrick Lawlers on record, looking at the service numbers you can rule out three of them because their numbers do not tally with the joining date, your man's service number is 51181 if that helps narrow it down for you further.
    9. Please see that attached link for the New Membership Categories Membership Categories Also a reminder that Joining Members or Restricted Members with less than 20 posts who do not log in within 12 months to the forum will have their membership deleted.
    10. As can be seen I have recently undertaken a major upgrade of the forum software. It will take a few days to sort out all the problems. Watch this space for some exciting new updates over the next week or so
    11. So the book closes on another era. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/6954937.stm
    12. This forum is to discuss militaria and where appropriate military conflict. Freedom of speech does not fall within this as political topics are off limits. I have removed irrelevant posts and locked this down.
    13. Re the medal marked 1914 I was under the impression this was specifically issued for War service 1914-18.
    14. Pictures please, have to say all sounds rather dubious.
    15. I think your right on that, my limited understanding is that a county police department covers small townships and municipalities that do not have their own specific police department and have pooled together and share a county department, this may be in addition to the Sheriffs department which usually covers Jails and areas outside town limits.
    16. The likelyhood of being able to compile an accurate list is not very high on this one. I doubt that many services who were entitled to award their personnel have kept a definitive list, compounded by the lack of naming is a recipe for disaster for future researchers.
    17. If there is a demand I will happily create a forum and see what happens.
    18. Thanks for posting such an interesting and topical collection, I have really enjoyed reading this thread.
    19. A simple photo editing program can easily reduce the size of a photo without losing too much detail. See this advice: http://gmic.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=18286
    20. Falange Espa?ola, Facist Party symbol
    21. Guys I will look into this issue and see what the exact pitfalls may be.
    22. This topic has been cleansed of the foul mouthed juvenile posts which an unknown individual decided to post yesterday. I have identified the source of the postings and I am in contact with the Network Administrator of the academic Institutional network from which they were sent. Thankfully they are taking the abuse of their network seriously and can hopefully identify the individual student or staff member and will take appropriate action.

      Napoleonic Art

Thats the bust which Stendhal felt was the truest likeness of Napoleon. He served under Napoleon in Russia as part of his administration.

      Napoleonic Art

Which portraits historically are accurate representations of Napoleon ? Stendhal (biographer) thought that the bust by Chaudet and the painting by Robert Lefevre the best and David and Canova the worst.
