Hi Nick, By re-reading your interesting posts on the Japanese medals (what I'm doing very often !) I read what you say about the mark "M" : " It will be interesting to note that I’ve never seen marked pillars in lower classes from 4th to 8th class (or marked breast stars if it comes to that)" I have noticed than I have in my collection a fourth class pillars with this mark... and than unfortunately my 3rd class has no hallmark. I do not know if it is interesting ?? but I wanted to indicate it to you. PS : Saddened for the quality of the image I do not manage to make a nice close-up on the hallmark, but it is really a M Regards Patout

I don't know the most important , the owner's name...and military rank Furthermore, I should like to know the meaning of the text on the top of the box under pawlonia blossom, between palms. Hi Nick, One thing to say : THANK ....regarding hours I spent to compare all the documents which I can find on the web and making comparison table of equivalence between former and recent writing of kanji...all that...all that... to have very weak, very thin and poor information to be exploited. I would not want to make an excessive use of your kindness but I would like to know what means 3 kanji below the central cherry blossom ? And for the document (I suppose it was a monetary award) what it concerns ? does it mentioned a medal and the amount of a pension ? I hope not to be too painful for all these questions ..... Hi dear everyone, Does anybody can help me to identify this case ? By making comparisons to boxes already seen and looking at Richard's web site, it seems to me that this box is Meiji and concern the russian-japanese conflict... am I right ? I need you help to translate kanji below the central cherry blossom (3 small + 4 larger) concerning I suppose the soldier name, rank and medals ? Hi Nick I had understood well that you had put this photo to illustrate our discussion about the marking M we talk about. But naturally I read the rest of this thread and I was able to notice by reading it that many collectors are intrigued and deceived by this so called or "pseudo early inscription" (as you say) of kanji. Live and learn...some more things to be learnt..but what a pleasure when it's a passion Best regards Patout

Hello to all dear friends collector : I come to you today to date a 3rd class rising sun. It seems to me that there are anachronisms : the date of manufacture of the case and the medal seems don't match. The medal box under the calligraphy of the kanji seems to be years 1900/1910. The medal is stamped with M mark and according to Dieter and Nick thread and studies mark M was created in 1929 and was in use till the end of 1936 at least. Furthermore the medal seems to have be gilded..but after examining in great detail the gilt had to have a small thickness and the medal seems to be in silver. My question : Is it possible that is an early piece with M mark ???? or more simply, it's not the right box for this medal ? Thank to all for your answers Patout

Hello everyone, About this matter, police and fire fighter brigade.. Badge bought for me by a friend this W.End on a second hand market with unidentified hand-written text and date on the inside lid of box. This badge seems to be from Showa era (police or fire fighter department ???) Any answer (in particular in translation of text and name) would be greatly appreciated Patout

About this matter..... Case offered by the minister of the imperial japanese navy in 1919. This box contained an imperial japanese flying association merit medal awarded to under lieutenant : Lecomte Lucien Edmond in 1919 who was member of the french aeronautical mission managed by colonel Faure in Gifu. This mission was received by the defense minister Tanaka Giichi ( 田中義一) , the director of aeronautics Inoue Ikutarō (井上幾太郎 ) and amiral Tōgō Heihachirō (東郷 平八郎). The medal is gilded silver and the inscription reads 'Imperial Aviation Society Merit Badge. Taisho 8 [1919]. I had never seen this type of box and writing and it seems to me that the medal had to be in another box inside this one ? Am I right or wrong what do you think ? Hello to any and all dear experts I am in great need of your help for translate a 2nd class sacred treasure document hand signed by Meiji emperor. Someone told me that it was awarded to a french colonial administrator in Indochina. Is that rignt ? and what is his name ? It seems to me according to Paul's excellent article "How to read japanese certificate..." that : the number of recording is 667; the year Jimmu 1896 ? and era Meiji 29 ??? but I have a problem to understand the date is it 18 ? 29 ? of July ? I don't understand a Kanji. For the rest of the document it's of course a great mystery that I hope somebody will help me to solve. I would like to know if this person had other japanese order. Above all I wanted to thank you all for the very high quality of this site and the big wealth of the information wich we find here. It's for me a gold mine of very useful informations. One particular thought for Nick who is always here to help the collector in distress, it is really ...."the pillar of site".... Unfortunately we have no site of this level in France.... In answerd to Nick's article about Tamatebako Miyaké : "If you have additional examples...please post them here". I want to present you a 2nd class sacred treaser from Taisho era. Hello to all , dear colleagues collectors Here is one of my last acquisitions, a rather rare french medal of the battle of Shanghai and a lot of photos witch belonged to a naval officer. I don't know how to read chinese but i think that three inscriptions have to give the names of districts occupied by the french concession and bombarder in 1937 by mistake by the chinese troops. This medal (in silvery bronze 5.5x8cm other face smooth) commemorates the numerous deaths and injuries made by this bombardement. On photos we can see the famous tank Renault FT send to protect the french concession and got back afterward by japanese. Not japanese medal...but all the same...interesting. Regards Patout
