By the way, number 8 is a brunswick Order of Henry the lion 4th class.

He did not get a Friedrich August as a officer candidate 🙂 This would show up in the Prussian Army lists. His hessen Bravery Medal is the right one, believe me 😉

Just checked my files, he did indeed get both Bulgarian orders in the Offiers class. Why he did wear the Alex after the Military Merit might have been his decision, even if the rules were different.

      Best,

I don't have access to the rolls, but I have seen something similar with other (but non-Hanover) medals. I think it's "LEOPOLD I", in contrast to a "LEOPOLD II" from the same unit. Men were counted within a company if there were two or more by the same family name!

You are right, this was common practise in Hannover. I. II. III. could be found. And this doesn't necessarilly was just in the same company.

What a beauty! Hasn't this cross been published and discussed before, like in the mid-1980s? It looks quite unusual, especially with the anachronistic italics. Do you consider it an award-type cross? I think it was addressed back then as a privately purchased variation, which wasn't uncommon to the era - so possibly a unique piece... ?! I might misremember this, so please feel free to correct me!

      ;)

Yes it was heavily discussed in the 80s. At the end, it was not decided what it is. End aof 18th century or begin of 19th.
