    1. And this is the modern replacement ribbon for sale on ebay
    2. This picture shows two 1916 medals issued to the same man. One his original 1940's version and the other a replacement issued in 1988 (I have the paperwork from the Department of Defence) which he received when he thought he had lost the first and requested the second. You can examine the difference in the weaves; the sizes compared to the top bar and note the ring size differences. It does not provide any definitive answer but adds fuel to the debate.
    3. Here is my question sent to the seller through ebay Dear ****** I would be fairly sure that the ribbon on the 1916 medal is a modern replacement and not original and thus not the"100% real article" as you state in the description. The ribbon is the hardest part of the 1916 medal to fake and thus an integral part of the providence of a medal. I'm sure you will be happy to add my comment to your item description. Paul And his reply Hi Paul, I have spoken with the seller who assures me that this is the ribbon that was with the medal when he purchased them. Equally we are both of the opinion that it is unlikely that it would have been changed prior to that. Also between us we have 3 other Rising medals to compare against and we are happy as to the authenticity of this one. As stated in my listing this set of medals come with a full money back guarantee if they are not as described. Thanks as always for your advice. Best Regards I hope the eventual winner is made aware of my (our?) thoughts so he can avail of the option of the "full money back guarantee if they are not as described" should he have any doubts.
    4. What are you thoughts, Gentlemen on the Ribbon of this 1916 medal for sale on ebay at the moment Item number: 300193808026, Paul
    5. Here are poor scans from my web , if anyone wants I will make beter scans
    6. Thank you for your offer & comments. As I have had some negative feedback to my web presentation of collectables from the Irish 1916 period now starting to include items from the both sides of the conflict, I feel I have to say it is a great commendation to the creators of, and contributors to, the GMIC that these threads can include such Gentlemanly exchanges of opinions on these subjects, it's a pleasure to be involved.
    7. Anyone who had died before the medals were issued in the early 1940's, had a named & numbered medal issued to his/her family/next of kin, irrespective of whether he was killed in action or simply died at any date before the issue. My web site on the subject of 1916 collectables is www.TheEasterRising.Eu Visit My Website
    8. Yes, but I don?t want to publish them in fairness to the purchaser, email through my web site if you want to discuss this further.
    9. A new comment on values and players: An officially named and numbered 1916 medal (higher than the 80's and thus not Easter week killed in action) changed hands at over 10,000 sterling today. The details of the purchaser as told to me by the family member selling the medal would indicate he is neither one of the "major" players nor even a member of the contributors or readers know to me in this thread.
    10. Agreed but at this moment in time (last 12 months) there are 3 or 4 people buying at this price range. All, I understand, were represented at the auction and all dropped out before it reached its close of ?25,000
    11. What should (or could) happen now? Should one or more of the "major players" purchase as much as possible and unite it, at top ebay prices? I think some items from his initial ebay cull (sold without reserves) are united already. Or would this just encourage and reward him? If he profits he may do it again and again at each auction. The 1916 with its start of 6,000 sterling may not get a bid if the so called "major players "decide to stay away. But the other smaller items will all sell as they have low start prices and will end up all over the place. Or is it all too late now for this great collection.
    12. I understand he is in "Ireland" not "Longwood England" as it says on ebay I think he uses an English address on ebay in order to list in Sterling and not Euro
    13. Gentlemen As an under bidder at this auction I was disappointed not to add this fantastic and complete collection to my own. I spoke afterwards with the winning bidder (who was unknown to me) and he indicated he may sell off some of the minor items individually but he was keeping the main (medal) set himself. Why is he breaking the medals up now? They did not sell as a full set on ebay recently as the main collectors where probably all represented at the auction, had reached there maximum mid, and thus knew his ebay reserve must be about ?24,000 to make him a profit after Whyte's charges. Did he think that someone new would appear on ebay and buy the set (less some of its items) for a value higher than what he paid plus commission? Or did he plan to break it up and try to make a profit from the start. This would introduce speculative bidding at the highest price level of 1916 collector's memorabilia in order to profit off those same collectors and at a loss to the medals recipient memories. I do not disapprove of buying and selling these items as no one would be able to join this hobby otherwise; however I do not approve of breaking up such a medal set. Most of us spend time and energy trying to put pieces of the jig saw that is 1916 memorabilia together as opposed to scattering them on the four winds.
    14. Danny, i have posted pictures of the 3 classes (not great quality though) at the following link http://www.theeasterrising.eu/025_AllMedals/All_Medals.htm Hope you find it helpfull Paul

    17. Thank you Paul, PK and other emails and phone calls, what an impact a posting to this forum can have. I have measured all my 1916 medals and can concur that the latter are all slightly thicker than the earlier examples. I have compiled a table on this subject but don't feel it would be wise to publish such accurate information in the public domain. The weight was the most noticeable difference when you had this piece in your hand; one of my examples is "rounded" at the end of its extremities probably more from wear and handling than the hand finishing process, although this hand finishing must also be taken into account. The six or so research requests (received from this and one other forum) have all been replied to directly, I was asked to publish the full data base but I would like to reiterate that this WILL NOT happen. I will answer any request personally if I have any data that I fell is theirs. Finally the link to the fake medals that I posted does now not work, sorry. I should have posted a link to my home page and not a sub-directory as it has been moved. So the correct link that should work permanently is www.TheEasterRising.eu Thank you all for your support on this web site project, it makes it all the more worthwhile to get so much positive feedback Corrected Link to Visit My Website
    18. Gentlemen, I would like to add some information to this forum, but do so with caution, due to the high profile and knowledge of its contributors. I had an opportunity to examine this 1916 medal in detail and compare its size and weight against the average size and weight of my collection. I have found in the past that there are small percentage differences between the proven originals. I have posted these sizes (in a per cent format only, to avoid adding further information to any forger) on my web site along with photographs of fake WISM and 1971 anniversary medals. I would appreciate if any one has one of the ?Australian? fake 1916?s to make contact as I don?t think this 1916 could be one of the Australian examples as these have been described as obvious fakes and I would not have considered this too obvious (perhaps through lack of experience ?). I would be interested to compare the weight and size of this ?fake? with an Australian fake. The pictures are at http://www.theeasterrising.eu/030%20Replicas/Replicas.htm It is with trepidation that I join this, my first forum, but I hope I have added to your discussion.
