    2. There is a believe a most helpful guide to Gothic script somewhere on the Forum but can I find it? Can anyone direct me please Regards David
    3. Bernd, Rick Many thanks, information appreciated. I assume that the medal was struck in the USA rather than Ireland! David
    4. Rick & Jens. Many thanks for your most helpful and kind responses. They were greatrly appreciated. My project is a bibliography and commentary on German books about the Great War - personal accounts, novels and etc - which were translated into English. I have located about 130 or so - excluding accounts by senior officers. (The objective is to show just how much there is in English for those, like me. whose German is, as my past teachers would have commented v. poor) So thanks again. David
    5. Please, can any of the naval experts provide any information on Karl Spindler (Lieutenant?) Imperial Navy who commanded the transport Libau - renamed Aud - which transported guns to Ireland for the Easter Rising - during which operation he was captured by the British? He was the author of 'The Phantom Ship' which was translated into English (of which I have a copy). Of particular interest would be any biographical information (birth, education, etc) and any details of his post war career and involvement in the German Navy during WW2.
    6. Once again thanks all for your courteous replies. All most welcome, all of great assistance Regards David
    7. Paul Very many thanks for your addition, the 39 -45 material is very helpful. In broad terms understand but, as usual, the abreviations are somewhat confusing. Is it possible that you can decode? If so it would be even more grateful. Thanks again David
    8. Rick Very many thanks for your kind, and extensive reply. I really am most grateful. The information was required for a bibliography and commentary of German books about the Great War upon which I am working. The objective is to provide a brief commentary on the book and, where possible, details of the author and his career. Hashagen was defeating me. The book is, I think, outstanding, well written and deeply considerate of the submariner's role, with none of the cloying nationalism and self justification which so many other German accounts of the war contain. Hashagen is content to let his service "do the talking".For information information there are at least 130 translated works - excluding those by the "great and the good" and they include army, navy, air service and home front accounts. So, many thanks again. If anyone can add post 1939 information it would be a bonus!
    9. I would greatly welcome any pre and post Great War information on the naval service of Ernst Hashagen who served on U22 and commanded U62. He was the author of "U Boats" Westward! published in English in 1931. I am aware that he also commanded a U boat training flotilla in WWII and became embroiled in a BBC/Government row when he was asked to participate in a BBC radio broadcast in the 30's. He was also a convinced internationalist after the Great War and sought to create friendly relations between the UK and Germany, but any additional gen would be most helpful. Post WWII activities dob and dod would also be appreciated. David Filsell
