    1. Hello,

The Iftihar and Sanayi Medal (1302- 1884) can be translated as "Pride, Gratification, Fine Arts and Industry" and it was awarded to civilian and military personnel who showed valor and gallantry and loyalty to the Empire as well as people who showed accomplishments in industry, fine arts and crafts and agriculture.

As is known Ferdinand Adolf Heinrich August Graf von Zeppelin (also known as Ferdinand Graf von Zeppelin, Graf Zeppelin and in English, Count Zeppelin) (8 July 1838 – 8 March 1917) was a German general and later aircraft manufacturer. He founded the Zeppelin Airship company. He was born in Konstanz, Grand Duchy of Baden (now part of Baden-Württemberg, Germany). (Wikipedia) Wikipedia do not mentioned this award under his other orders and medals list.

Although he was dead before the end of the war he must have receive the medal for his outstanding achievement.

It would be very interesting to find more as you say pictures and especially the document for this medal.

Thanks for bringing this subject to our attention.

    3. Here is another lovely piece, from Sultan Abdulmecid period. It is also said that a similar one has been given to British Ambassador Sir Henry Layard's wife, before that it have been awarded to women who helped victims of war and disasters. I thing it was during his first term in Istanbul as an attache because of the dates he served in Istanbul.

    4. Hi,

The tugra and pseudonym belongs to Sultan Mahmud II 1223-1255 (1808-1839).

I checked Mr. Erüreten's book Ottoman Medals and Orders pages:38-138 (a copy of an old book which show the designs of the orders given) but couldn't find a similar one. So it may not belong to a high ranking Ottoman civilian because there is no similar drawing shown in the old book (also not military because they have their class insignia/symbols instead of tugra) but (just guessing) probably a foreign dignitary or a lower ranking embassy personnel not ambassador. (Ambassadors have a wreath under the tugra)

      Best wishes

    5. Hi,

As far as I know, during Sultan Mahmud II 1223-1255 (1808-1839) specially designed orders had been awarded to army and civilians, these specially designed/made orders had also been given to foreigners. These orders were specially designed (Nishan-ı Zishan, they also had other names) for every civilian position and every rank (by seeing this order you could have understood the rank) and also specially designed for some important military, civilian, foreign and domestic persons. But this system had been stopped during the reign of Abdülmecid 1255-1277 (1839-1861) and one type Order (1839) (Iftihar Nishanı - Order of Pride/Glory---- Nisan: Order - "s" has a dot under it (sh) ) had been awarded high ranking civilian and military personnel, but Sultan Abdülmecid still awarded some specially designed orders to special domestic and foreign persons like the old times.

IMHO this sample is awarded during Sultan Abdulmecid's reign as you say 1839-1861, because tugra bears his pseudonym (mahlas) flower.

    6. Hi,

Position and style of the rivets as if they had screw nut on them as far I checked do not match the other well known makers. As Paul says most probably German specially made piece. I liked what Chris said "a probable "marriage" of the box"

    9. Hello,

Please add the films you know about Gallipoli and WWI Turkey. Please indicate it, if it is documentary.

      Let me start with:

      TELL ENGLAND

Mustafa Kemal Atatürk liked the film when he saw it on 22.1.1932.

      Tell England – 1931 | 80mins | War | B&W Plot Synopsis

      http://www.britmovie...ll-England_1931

Edgar Doe and Rupert Ray, boyhood friends, enlist in the British army at the outbreak of war in 1914. Both receive commissions and are sent eventually as part of the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force to Gallipoli The horrors of war begin slowly to damp their romantic enthusiasm, and Doe, the more idealistic and sensitive of the two is nerve racked by months of inactivity and then by the cruel slaughter of his men by a Turkish trench mortar. He quarrels with Ray (a young, inarticulate Englishman) who has been promoted to captain, and breaks down; he regains self-confidence on learning that he has been chosen to lead a raid on the Turkish trenches.

Doe goes over the top, is seriously wounded, but manages single-handed to put the trench mortar post out of action. Soon after his death, the British withdraw from Gallipoli. The expedition has been a military blunder and only the scores of English graves left behind commemorate a tragic campaign.
