Correct
Also the crowns are important Because the Presidency period Crown could be confused with 4th Type LOH from the First Empire period as the cross you listed The central medallion could be deceiving since many crosses had their medallions replaced at some stage due to the new Ruler or due to lost of the original ones
Thank you Graf.

Welcome I hope it helped The diamond shape maker marks might have the initials of the maker If you have the cross you can look with magnification if the seller has it you can ask him to look for letters within the mark In my experience the First Empire LOH are rare maker marked Mainly the hallmark is present on the ribbon ring as the one I listed above
All knight crosses from this period are Silver and anything from Officer and up are -18 Carat Gold
While on the topic - there are LOH, which some classify as "100" days model They are hybrids between the 1st Empire and Monarchy Periods crosses The 1/2 size LOH on the middle of the pictures bellow. Some of those crosses have 1st Empire central medallions. In my opinion it was very turbulent period and parts were quickly replaced and reversed depending of who was the Ruler for the moment
Any way I do not believe that your LOH is from this Period
I hope more members will reply with their knowledge and opinion

Thank you so much. Am I correct that all 1st Empire LOHs had ribbon bows at the bottom of the cross whose ends splayed out and did not go straight down like the example that I posted?

Thank you so much. I thought that could be the case.

May I also inquire into the guy on my Brunswick Leib Battalion? Has name was Friedr. Hornburg. Thank you.

Hello,
What say the experts as to the authenticity of this piece. The centers and crown look like 1st Empire but I haven't seen a period piece with a ribbon bow at the base like this one. I am told there is a diamond maker's mark on the back of that bow. Your insight would be greatly appreciated.
If Bison is out there, I have sent him a similar inquiry. Thank you!

Thanks For posting this. I like how you have framed it. Is that a regimental button on the left side?
Yes it is.

Outstanding! Finally, someone has done this.

I'm happy to see that someone else appreciates de Vigny's rather somber memoir.

This has been going on for some time. In 1979 I spoke at an international symposium in Warsaw and later visited a shop where around 30 women were hand painting copies of Russian and Polish orders and regimental insignia. I was told that they were for the collector market.
This problem has been around for a long time, alas.

Leave it to JapanX to come through with the correct info for this thread. Now if he can only find me an inexpensive, silver, good quality, copy/fake of an 1807 Saint George Cross!

Member 922F, said it all!
There is a medal auction coming up at Drouot, managed by Beaussant-Lefevre on 26 march at 13.30h.
And when visiting the flea market of St- Ouen, drop by at La Strasbourgeoise for a lovely choucroute in a very nice 1900 interior, in front of the Gare de l'Est.
Thanks for the Alsatian restaurant suggestion. It sounds like great way to spend a day.

Hello,
I have only been to Paris once (2003) and did see the Musee de l'Armee but not the Palais de Legion d'honneur (which I still must do). I was wondering what other military related sites are' must sees'. Also, can anyone point out what militaria dealers in Paris are also to be visited? I'm especially interested in medals and 18th-19th century militaria. Are the 2 large flea markets worth searching for such militaria? Merci!

That is a very nice collection. I still need to get an authentic 1813 EK 2 but they are indeed hard to find. I too love this thread.

The above photo is apparently a known authentic 1813. Any other opinions out there?

Thank you Ulsterman. It is a shame that the history of these types of pieces is so shadowy.

That was very interesting. It reminded me of Captain Minard's famous graph on the Russian Campaign of 1812. Thanks for posting.

The leaves, the crown and the bottom stem are details I have been told in the past to be aware of in identifying authentic 1813 EKs from the fakes. But how so exactly? These seem to be somewhat 'trade secrets' on this site. Maybe properly in order to keep the fakers ignorant. I get that. The one detail that I have gleaned (correctly so???) is that the real 1813s have more of a straight bottom stem. Thanks for your input Vince.

Thanks for weighing in. Can you be more specific so I can understand the pitfalls of the 1813?

Thank you Christiania. Did soldiers ever get it? It seems to turn up in Imperial Russian collections I am led to believe.

I suspect that you are correct. Just as I am attempting to add to my Napoleonic collection 😔
