    1. All:

Just picked up this beautiful little bar today at a show, partially because I was very curious about it. The first three awards are Bulgarian, I believe, then the last one, Imperial Russian. I've owned one other of the latter medals and it had been awarded to a UK Royal Navy sailor...but that was a few years back and I got lucky. Anyone have any thoughts about this bar, and furthermore, would it have belonged to an officer? Enlisted? And what are the medals?

      Thanks!

      Dave

    2. All:

Doing a bit of investigatory research for a couple projects, and I was wondering if anyone happened to have any orders or medals that fell in any of the following number ranges. If they are researched, all the better! If not, that's perfectly okay as well. I am _NOT_ looking to buy these awards, I am simply interested in them to fill in blanks in a couple databases.

Patriotic War 1st Class (these fall into the May/June 1945 awards, possibly for Berlin) 2475XX

Patriotic War 2nd Class (likewise, right at the end of fighting in Europe awards) 5572XX

Red Star (I believe some of these may fall into long service awards and/or end of War awards) 3664XX and 15539XX (two separate ranges)

      Glory 3rd Class 3879XX

      Medal "For Valor" 20757XX

Medal "For Military Merit" (these should be long service) 25510XX

What I'm looking for is a reply of something like: "I own OGPW 2nd Class number 557249 and it was awarded to Lieutenant Ivan Federenko on 12 May 1945 by the 1st Ukrainian Front" or "I own Red Star 366444 and it hasn't been possible to research it". Include it here in the thread, or send me a PM.

Thanks in advance for any help!

    3. What is your book? Americans with Soviet awards?

I'm tracking down all of the Soviet awards to US Navy personnel in WW2. I'm in touch with either the actual recipients or families of about half of the 205 awards given out in 1944 and 1945 so far. My goal is to make contact with the families of every recipient. Not sure if that will happen, but I am doing my best to make it so.

The book will include bios of all of the recipients as well as photographs of their awards and documents (both US and Soviet). That's why I'm trying to figure out where Sissler's award went off to...

    4. Dave,

Do you mean that you could actually ask for research up front. I've hovered around Padolsk archives a few times but was advised not to try to approach the archives themselves inquiring about reseach! I chose to do as I was told! I'll be back in Moscow in May/June so if it still possible to knock on their door, I could try to pluck up the courage to actually go to one of the guard booths!!

      Jim

Yep, I just walked in. In fact, it's the door on the small building to the right in your photo. No one said I couldn't...

    5. My perfections are many, I blush to say it aloud.

My whole life long women have followed me... just the rumour of how perfect I am drove them wild.

I must admit, I am getting older... but am still perfect... at least... thats what all the chicks say.... :ninja:

      LOL! Nice!

The 640U sounds like one of my old ones...I just found one on amazon for $60, so I'm going to jump on it.

Here's a vivid example of the failure of my canon LiDE 210. The smaller image in the lower corner was done with an early Epson, whereas the HORRIBLE image was done this morning on the Canon...

    6. I've gone through four scanners in the last 15 years and frankly, the earliest ones were the best. I had two of them back-to-back that were able to focus out to 3/4"...pretty amazing for a flat bed scanner. However, they were either broken or lost during moves (flatbed scanner glass and military movers don't mix...) and I am now out of scanners - and I need one. I was looking online yesterday and found the Canon LiDE models, and discovered we had an unused one (a 210) at work, so I borrowed it for a test drive. Playing with it this morning...I'm glad I didn't buy one!!! You can see from the scan of the document below that unless the item is 100% on the scanner face, it's blurred out...it might have 1/16" focal range.

I'm sure there are good scanners out there for medals, patches, wings and the like, but I don't have the means or time to buy a bunch of them and try them out. What have you found to work well?

Thank you in advance for advice!

      Dave
