    1. Hi, So I guess this is a bit of a loaded question.  It would depend.

The Serial number and such would have been when and where the sailor was inducted into the  Reichsmarine or Kriegsmarine.  The Physical locations.  N being Northsee and O being Ostsee. for example.

Chances are, that this sailor would have been assigned to a unit or schule before being assigned to the Scharnhorst.

    2. Nice piece. I would assume a stamp with the eagle and Marine along with possibly a N or O designation assigned number.  That would be what I would expect to see for a naval attributed piece.  However, that is from a novice who is not familiar specifically with these kinds of equipment.   Do you think that there was a rubber gasket that might now be missing?  To help keep it waterproof?

    3. Wow, this flag has seen better days.  A flag with less holes would typically go for around 500-600USD  in this condition and size (This is a larger flag and so harder to display) I would figure no more than $300USD in today's market.

Here is an example of one that is being sold and is in much better condition.  Same maker as well

    4. There is a wealth of knowledge on this fourm as well as others. The best thing you can do is to do some research on your own. Look at various examples.  Look for label marks and compare with other known examples.  As you noted, This would be a very expensive mistake to make if you were uneducated.  With prices like you said, a period one will not be cheap.  Get feedback...post here, ask questions, get people whom have a good reputation and have no invested interest who can give you feedback info.  Don't feel rushed.  If you see a tunic that is grossly under priced, don't fall victim to an impulse.   Genuine articles will always catch a market premium.  SS is the most expensive area of focus in the Third Reich collectables for the most part.  The websites of those selling can also be a great place to learn. For example, Here is a SS tunic and pants being sold by H.Weitze.  https://www.weitze.net/militaria/13/SS_SD_Feldbluse_und_Stiefelhose_fuer_einen_SS_Sturmscharfuehrer_des_Sicherheitsdienst_nbsp__381413.html  The photos can help you look and see the construction, the description can also help.

      Best of luck.

    5. Well, the photos shared has both soldiers appear to wear the combo Eagle and Kokarde along with a clearly visible edelweiss.   These hats appear from time to time. I wouldn't suggest getting a reproduction.   If a hat is a hard thing to display, perhaps you could do something that is a bit easier.   A simple edelweiss, the eagle you shared and any other personal effects you have.  Make a little case.

Here is a tribute I did to the Mountain troops Gebirgsjäger for some inspiration.

    6. Greetings,
I just acquired a lovely sales display board from pre 1935.  Anyway, there is a piece that was missing from the board.  The lower insignia should be the Marine Seeflieger rescue badge like this one.

Now, I don't happpen to have one of these insignia. I was also wondering if I should continue to add labels to the piece as well.  There were some that managed to survive but there are lots that are missing.  So, What are your thoughts?  Should I leave it alone.  Should I hunt and possibly incorporate this insignia when I get it?   Should I add names?  This is a period board I believe.  I would love to hear the thoughts of the members.   What would you do?

      Thanks for looking.

    7. I too have noticed issues after contributing and becoming a patron.  Just FYI

I also notice that certain threads like imperial german insignia and headgear have been removed from my feed.  Did these threads get combined?

      Thanks,

      JustinG

    8. Greetings,

Well, I am a collector of naval tallies/Mützenband.  I have also a rather large collection of naval photographs.  I enjoy doing photomerge or collages.  So, I thought I would start a thread and share some pieces with you.  I also have a Wappen collection of these ships and so I can share image merge with you in that way too.  Thanks for looking.

      Best Regards

    9. Hi Martin W,

Yes, I have seen your photo before, it is a great one.  I couldn't pass this up for such an incredible attributed piece. Plus, It goes nicely with the other now 30 wappen I have in my collection.   Quite the illustrious career that Ludolf Petersen had.   The Hilfskreuzer branch of the Kriegsmarine is indeed one of fabled folklore. I know I am talking to the choir on this one.  Martin, I know you have an incredible collection of HSK documents, awards and artifacts.  I am indeed envious of that.   Cheers to you, thanks for reposting your photo of Ludolf Petersen.

      Best Regards,

      JustinG
