    3. And right here on gmic a pic of Dandar wearing his hero star:
    4. I hope to source more materials / information on Dandar. He was quite the 'personality' apparently. As per Urnukh's book, Dandar - was awarded the Hero title on 7.9.39 (only the 5th person to be awarded the title and only the 2nd person to actually get a gold star issued) - then it was revoked on 18.1.46 - and he was reinstated on 29.9.64
    5. And here a statue of Dandar with him on his famous horse https://mongolia-guide.com/place/lodongiin-dandar-equestrian-statue " LODONGIIN DANDAR EQUESTRIAN STATUE 119 Share The statue of Mongolia's most famous war hero, Lodongiin Dandar (1914-1986), commonly known as "the Hero on a Pinto Horse," was unveiled in 1999 by the design of Ts.Tsegmid. 6. More to come later, but first... http://mongoliafaq.com/?p=2605 "Who is Mongolia’s most famous military commander? October 26, 2018 by Anand Nyamdavaa 1 Mongolia has its share of famous military commanders. Let me tell you about the one you probably never heard of. But he is famous in Mongolia. He was legendary for chopping heads while charging on a horse. His horse, a spotted stallion became his trademark. If you say a Hero on a spotted horse, Mongols would immediately recognize this person. Dandar baatar (Dandar the hero) was an ordinary man with extra-ordinary story. He was born in 1914 and conscripted into military service in 1935. He studied in a military school in Tambov, Russia and upon graduation was assigned to the 6th Cavalry division. As a newly minted lieutenant, he participated in the first skirmishes with the Kwantung Japanese units. Starting from May of 1939 the skirmishes became invasion. Japanese units were able to surround the HQ of the 6th division and the head, Shariibuu was killed. Dandar a mere lieutenant was ordered to be in charge of the division. He was given the rank of a major. Probably, the fastest promotion in Mongolian military history. Dandar baatar was a courageous man, he would lead his units by holding the machine gun in his hand and charging towards the enemy. One of his military officers chided him for doing that. As a head of a division he was not supposed to lead the attack. His military exploits became stuff of legends. The frequently mentioned legend was his skill in using a sword to chop the heads of the Samurais while charging on the horse. Of course, the reality was a little bit different. In one of the interviews, when he was asked about the chopping part, he laughed and said that even though he used his sword on occasions, his main weapons were his revolver and a machine gun. He mentioned one time during the charge he used his sword to kill his enemy. But he was not able to remove the sword as it was stuck in the body. because of that he fell off the horse. One of his officers rushed in and helped him mount the horse again before being trampled by the advancing cavalry. For his courage and bravery he was given many medals and commendations. His biggest commendation was when he was bestowed a title of an “Extraordinary Hero.” From then on he was called Dandar Baatar, Dandar the hero. After the end of the Khalkhiin gol war, Dandar baaatar was sent to the Soviet Union for additional training. WW2 started and he was ordered back. With the start of the Manchuria Offensive in 1945, Dandar baatar has also participated in that war. While there, however, he was arrested for killing a Soviet soldier, over a disagreement. In prison, he was harassed by the inmates. One of the “bosses ” ordered him to fire a stove. While firing the stove, he chose one of the long sticks and proceeded attacking 10 inmates in his cell. His skill in wielding the sword was handy. He shouted:“I am a military officer who killed enemies and shed blood, don’t you dare talk to me like that.” From then on nobody bothered him anymore. He was released after four years. In 1964, he was exonerated and all his military titles and awards were restored. He continued his military service as an officer, and continued his studies in Soviet Union at the prestigious Frunze military Academy. He passed away in 1986." Santa Clause had a late delivery for me and I was very excited by it! Here the Hero of Mongolia gold star with serial nr 13 (confirmed to be awarded to Dandar as per Urnukh's book and validated by Dandar's family). Don't know if the case is original or not. The connecting ring between the star and suspension was cut at some point. A well worn example with an interesting life!
    7. Long time ago, but any chance on help with the name of the recipient?

    9. Part of the answer for me is not the items themselves but the process of collecting - i.e. it's a great 'excuse' to travel and when I'm visiting museums I have a much more focused eye for certain things. With that travel (as well as the acquisition process) also comes getting to know and sometimes meeting people from all walks of life: business exec's, non-profit, politicians, security service, 'criminals', etc. - that's also fascinating.

    11. Sharing some info that an enthusiastic reader of the board (with Russian language skills!) shared with me: The stamp on the anniversary medal doc is from military unit 68202, which appears to be some portion of the Soviet garrison in Ulaanbaatar. There are two hits for it on google. One is a Russian forum thread (http://mongol.su/forum/index.php?topic=630.100) where someone who worked there (as a civilian, apparently) wrote something ambiguous (includes some neat pics!). In the same sentence, he mentions housing services (КЭЧ), a staff, a signals regiment, infantry, and electricity generation. The other result is an Odnoklassniki page (https://ok.ru/group/51808659177570) for the unit. The page is labeled КЭЧ, and the photos look pretty domestic. Researcher indicates he doesn't know what to conclude, since one unit number could encompass a lot, but that it is odd for a document to a foreigner (an active duty Colonel no less) to be signed by someone of comparatively low rank (Lt. Colonel Zykov, commander of unit 68202) from a backwater unit.
    12. Oops... unfortunate typo, my laptop is old and clearly needs a new keyboard!
    13. Yes, eagerly awaiting that. Ms Slutz is a former US ambassador to Mongolia and apparently caught a bit of the Mongolia collecting bug as well. She was also awarded a Polar Star order,
    14. Any updates on DPRK collecting? I've been considering acquiring one of the beautiful Soviet made awards (such as the Order of Labor) and was surprised to see the previously large amount of high end awards for sale on a New Jersey dealer site virtually all having disappeared.
    15. Can the Medal for strengthening Military Cooperation be awarded twice ? Yes, it can... but apparently this isn't supposed to happen. Here's another example: https://gmic.co.uk/topic/75647-lieutenant-general-shevtsov-va/?tab=comments#comment-684412
    16. Thanks to somebody helping me with this group I received scans of the award documents missing - somebody else must be lucky to have them in their collection. Perhaps a slim chance to reunite at some point. This includes the double awarding of the Strengthening of Brotherhood in Arms medal.
    17. In a nutshell, comrade Todkhuu was an outstanding worker who dedicated his life to others. The source in Erdenet indicated that Todkhuu was nominated for the title of Hero of Labor but for some reason he never got it. Below a copy of his Blue Book - nr 59, very brief And here some more pics - the overview of all doc's in the group, some close ups of photographs and a close up of the State Prize award document
    18. Here the People's Deputy grievance book Some of his work drawings... Several ID doc's Innovators License Certificates issued to comrade Todkhuu that his photo was placed on the annual Wall of Fame of the Best Workers and Employees of the Factory. Invitation from Mongolian Communist Parliament to conrade Todkhuu asking him to attend the parliament sessions (one in Nov 1974 and another in Dec 1976). The other two blue hard cover docs were awarded to Todkhuu for labor achievements from the UB Meat Processing Factory named after Stalin.
    19. Documented State Prizes are rare so I thought I'd add below link and below is certainly well documented so it deserved its own thread. https://gmic.co.uk/topic/75710-state-prize-winner-comrade-gentsen-todkhuu/
    20. This group passed through multiple pairs of hands before it ended in my collection and it is a wonderfully documented group. It originated from Erdenet town although Comrade Todkhuu (born in 1919) for many years worked at a/the UB meat processing factory. Judging from the documents in the group, comrade Todkhuu worked there as a welder and rationalizator (whatever that means). He was bestowed the State Prize in 1975 for "mechanization of the production process, improving the labor productivity and increasing the factory efficiency" as quoted from the large red State Prize Diploma. He was also a deputy of People's Great Khural. Judging from the two large photos, comrade Todkhuu was also awarded the Order of Sukhbaatar, ORBLV, two OPS and various medals. Unfortunately, the family got his suit with all orders, medals and badges stolen back in the 1990s. Todkhuu was able to have his State Prize Badge and some minor medals re-issued. Since his passing away roughly 20 years ago, Todkhuu's son has kept his State Prize badge and all his documents as a memory. Included in the group are the following: a) Re-issue State Prize Badge with the original State Prize Winner's Diploma. b) Document of the Medal of 40th anniversary of People's Revolution. c) Document of the Medal of 50th anniversary of People's Revolution. d) Document of the Medal of 60th anniversary of People's Revolution. e) Hard-cover document of the Badge of Best Worker of the Ministry of Food and Light Industry. Signed by the Minister P. Damdin. Awarded in 1977. f) Document of Best Care Taker of the Youth. Awarded in 1976. g) Document of the Winner of Socialist Labor Competition. Awarded in 1971. h) Document of the Badge "Winner of 5th Five-Year Plan" awarded in 1974. i) Document of the Badge "Winner of 5th Five-Year Plan" awarded in 1980. j) Small Document of the Badge "Member of Socialist Labor Brigade" awarded in 1967. k) Blue Leather cover document of the Winner of Socialist Labor Competition. Awarded in 1979. l) Finance and Accounting school certificate issued to comrade Todkhuu in 1939. He enrolled the school in 1938 and graduated a year later. For some reason, he did not pursue the accounting career but the skills he learnt at the school helped him a lot to come up with innovative ideas later. The document has young Todkhuu's picture. m) Large document awarded to comrade Todkhuu as the participant of the Regional Conference of Care-takers of young generation. n) And one of the most interesting documents... a People's Deputy's Official grievance book. The group includes two books. The official book was issued to each deputies to take notes of the problems raised and proposals put forward by the electorate. The books have been filled with deputy Todkhuu's handwritten text. After each text, the deputy used to sign it and date. The issues that were written in this book were copied and sent to the Parliament Secretariat. There are also official letters from ministries addressed to deputy Todkhuu informing him what actions were taken in response to his request and instructions. o) The group also includes some documents pertaining to his primary work at the Meat Processing Factory. As mentioned, comrade Todkhuu was an inventor. He received the State Prize for series of inventions that led to improvement of the factory's production output and increased the operational efficiency. The photos in the group show some hand-written and hand-drawn draft proposals on changing the production line for removing sheep and goat skin. It is possible to assume that this particular proposal was a part of the work that earned him the awards and the State Prize in particular. There are few documents in the group that pertain to this kind of work. p) The group also includes 9 documents, some bearing the photos of comrade Todkhuu, being professional ID docs, local khural deputy ID and delegate IDs. q) The group also has an Original Innovator's License issued to a group of workers including Todkhuu in Sept. 1979. The license was given to the proposal to introduce salt washing and grinding line at the Food Factory.Signed by the Deputy Minister of Food and Light Industry and sealed with the stamp of the ministry. r) The group also includes certificates issued to comrade Todkhuu that his photo was placed on the annual Wall of Fame of the Best Workers and Employees of the Factory. s) Also two identical looking documents. The paperback is an invitation from Mongolian Communist Parliament to conrade Todkhuu asking him to attend the parliament sessions (one in Nov 1974 and another in Dec 1976). t) The other two blue hard cover docs were awarded to Todkhuu for labor achievements from the UB Meat Processing Factory named after Stalin. Both documents dated 1953 and 1955 respectively. You can read the Stalin name on the seal of the factory. This group is not entirely complete although I have the majority of documents related to Todkhuu's awards. Major exceptions are the order booklet and the People's Deputy badge doc. The photos of him wearing all his awards really help in figuring out what would have been a complete set. Also, three original photographs included: a) Comrade Todkhuu wearing all his awards including the People's Deputy badge (probably taken in 1970s) b) Comrade Todkhuu wearing all his awards (on the back of the photo is a stamp of the Meat Processing Factory and the date of 1988. The hand-written note says that this photo was place on the hall of fame at the factory). c) A group photo depicting the Best unit of the Factory from 1973-1975. Comrade Todkhuu is second on the right on top row. The picture also depicts the building of the factory and a part of meat processing equipment system (sheep/goat skin removal line). The description is done in Mongolian, Russian and German. GDR was a major partner in upgrading this factory. Todkhuu's name and some brief info on his State Prize justification are in the big Blue Book (page 720. no 59). Will be posting a LOT of pics in coming minutes.
    21. Here a group of documents that belonged to Lt.Colonel Sambuu Dorjgotov. He was a senior ranking officer at the Ministry of Public Security of MPR back in 1970s. He was a Senior Officer (Deputy Chief) of the Department #1 (Foreign Intelligence) of the Ministry of Public Security in 1972. In other word: a spy. At that time he held the rank of Major. Documents in the group: 1) Order of Sukhbaatar recipient's booklet for receiving monthly 50 tugrugs. The document has the recipient's photo and the details of the Sukhbaatar order (besides the award date and decree number, it also lists the serial number #1289 and serial number of the booklet #1241). He received the payments from November 1977 till end of June 1979. 2) Order and Medal Booklet listing three awards: 1) Honorary Medal of Combat # 5110 awarded in 1956; 2) Order of Combat Valor awarded in 1961 and Order of Red Banner of Combat Valor awarded in 1972. 3) Document for the Medal of 50 Years of Mongolian State Security awarded in 1972. 4) Document for the Medal of 50 Years of Mongolian People's Army awarded in 1971. 5) Document for the Medal of 30 Years of Victory over Japan awarded in 1975. 6) Delegate's credentials to the 16th Congress of Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party dated June 8, 1971.
