    1. Hello, yes there are lots of oaks in Canada, and yes it is made of oak. I also think that a picture is never the same as holding something in ones hand. Putting it on a plaque was done so it was not rolling around collecting dents and scratches. The engraved plate you can see is modern but hard to tell from the picture. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to display these items? Are there any internet sites that describe them? I have not found anything on the net, infact, this is the only old billy club I have ever seen, did enough survive to make them collectable?
    2. Actually the colour is decieving, the flash did this. The blade is all chrome except where you noticed at the ricasso. There is small corrosion shaped like worms or roots under the plating. The plating is good and very thin as the etching is still crisp and visible. The satin background of the etching has stayed satin even with plating, it has taken on the same texture. I believe the plating was done along time ago. One of RWL books mentions a plating/gilt shop in the mid 150's, but does not elaborate to say whether it is the blue and gilt or possibly chrome, nickel, or silver. I have compared the sword to others plated in nickel and this one is chrome, a whiter colour.
    3. Sorry for the confusion, I did not think the plaque would become part of the conversation. I put the club on the wood myself, it is a piece off an antique organ (panel). The engraved plaque I had done with what was stamped on the club so it made it legible as the stamp is small letters. I used wire to attach it so I did not harm it by drilling.. It came from the Peterborough area as far as I know.
    4. It appears to be a manufacturers stamp, it appears on it four times.
    5. Hello, have you seen other swords of this type with plated blades? The one I pictured looks like plating done when it was made, any ideas? The etching is crisp, never buffed over and corrosion underlying the plating appears very old. I have not come across other swords with plated blades.
    6. Interesting that the blade is plated. How early did they have the capability of chrome plating. I have a rifle officers sword by Reeves dated 1871 and it also has plating that looks to be period done. The plating is dull where the etching background is, very thin and does not obscure any etching
    7. Hello, looking for pictures of H de H Haig R.E. He was commissioned 1873 and was Capt. in Jan 1874. He was A.Q.M.G. to Maj. General Middleton during the North West Rebellions of 1885 in Canada. He illustrated for The Illustrated London News during the rebellions. Later was made Colonel, after retirement in 1906, in 1921 was Brevet Col. and still active in 1931 contributing to Notes & Queries Magazine. Any pictures of him are greatly appreciated.
    8. Hello, great forum, very helpful people. I collect Canadian militaria and specialize in British pattern swords. Also repair guns, had many years in the military doing same.

    9. Looking for photos of a Captain H de H Haig R.E. He illustrated for The Illustrated London News. Looking for 1885 era, I have one picture of him as a major. He was A.Q.M.G. to Maj. General Middleton during the North West Rebellions of 1885.
    10. Hello, I don't collect this type of badge but came across it, thought it was something Canadian. I am thinking of selling, do you know the value of this? Regards, Will.
    11. Another item I am trying to identify. A. Thompson Saddler is stamped several times on it. My father has had this for over 60 years, it is Canadian I believe. When you click to size picture, that is about actual size of truncheon.
    12. I would like to identify this helmet plate, it came from an estate of a NWMP about 1909 who later moved to the States.
    13. Hello, just added this to my collection, new for helmet plates. What is it? It came from a NWMP who later moved to the States. I do not know if it is Canadian, British or somewhere in the UK. Any help is appreciated.
