1. The Traveling Museum stopped by today (the hottest day of 2009--so far) and brought more items to be Epsonized before moving along down the Highway Of Life. This ribbon bar and badge have us stumped. While I have been able to identify SOME of the ribbons, the rest are totally unknown to me. Construction of this ribbon bar is quite interesting-- each ribbon is laid onto a strip of some sort of brittle transparent celluloid. Top row and down left to right-- 1) Latvian Order of the Three Stars? 2) Latvian ? 3) Latvian 1928 Independence Jubilee 4) but Lithuanian 1918 Independence Medal ? 5) much fading of color-not-fast dye = Lithuanian Medal of Vytautas the Great for a 1930 song festival (?!) 6) Lithuanian Order of the Swastika ? 7) ??? 8) ??? 9) ??? 10) Lithuanian-- ? Home Guard Medal OR Boy Scouts Order of the Lily ? 11) Lithuanian Liberation of Klaipéda Medal ? 12) ??? The badge was originally screwback but was made into a pinback long long ago: The mixture as well as the actual identifications are baffling, so any identifications would be much appreciated.
2. Greetings All. I have a "Central" Lithuania medal I need to identify. I know it is from shortly after WWI, when Poland occupied part of Lithuania, most importantly Wilna (Vilnius in Lithuania), the historic capital of Lithuania. I though do not know what it was awarded for and by whom. Also, I do not understand the Polish text on the medal. Any assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Linas
3. Trying to track down the identity of the last ribbon on this ribbon bar, and one suggestion that I've heard is that it might be the Lithuanian Knight's Cross of the Order of Vytautas the Great, or the Bronze Medal of the Order of Vytautas the Great. Could those of you more familiar with that decoration let me know if that is indeed plausible, and if so, possibly clue me in as to who typically received this award and under what circumstances they received it? Thanks, Chris
4. Having just been reading the Law on State Awards of 18 June 2002 (which the Lithuanian government has obligingly posted online for the delight of the likes of me!), I've settled down to having a look at the ODM of the modern Republic of Lithuania post 1991. The highest award is the Order of Vytautas the Great. Harking back to the original, instituted on 1 September 1930 as the premier award of the first republic (1918-1940), it was re-instituted on 12 September 1991. At first it had but a single class - which wore the badge on a sash, with a star and a collar - but it has subsequently expanded to a five-class order, with a special class - the Order of Vytautas the Great with Golden Chain - and an associated Medal. Being so recent, pictures are hard to come by... but here's the Order of Vytautas the Great with Golden Chain! The Chain itself consists of links decorated with motifs of the double cross and of the letter V, with the cross of the Order suspended from it. This cross is white-enamelled gold, 50mm long, with a stylised horseman on a red shield (obverse) with a crown above. The reverse has a red shield with the letter V and has the dates of Vytautas the Great's rule (1392-1430) on the arms of the cross. It's suspended from a royal crown with three crystal stones. Here it is: The star for this class is gold with nine rays, 85mm in diameter. In the centre, which is red, there is a white cross of the order with a crown above.
5. Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaitė presented a state decoration conferred posthumously on former Russian President Boris Yeltsin to his widow Naina Yeltsin. Boris Yeltsin was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of the Cross of Vytis for his personal contribution to strengthening Lithuanian statehood and promoting bilateral relations between Lithuania and Russia, informs BCpresidential press service. 6. Your guess is as good as mine: http://cgi.ebay.de/Orden-Baltische-Staaten...1QQcmdZViewItem One of the more unusual pieces I've seen floating around!
7. Dear Colleagues and Friends, Try as I might, I find my resources for pictures of certain countries during the 1930-1945 period are simply too slim in America, online or in English. I am trying valiantly to create fill out pilot images from some pretty rare countries like: Lithuania Denmark (especially pre-war - I have some wartime on the site) Sweden Norway (pre-war in Norway - NOT in Canada - lots of those) Estonia What I am looking for are scans out of books or of original pictures showing: - Portraits of air force personnel showing their uniforms with rank and air insignia (most important!) - Casual pictures of air force personnel in uniform showing insignia - nice clear shots of parked aircraft showing the national insignia of the period. Can you provide any help? As I said, this is for advancing my online museum and resource at http://www.rathbonemuseum.com I would need the digital images to be of good size. Preferably at least 600X900 pixels but I will take anything at this point. Thanks so much in advance for your help. Cheers, Tod Rathbone tod@rathbonemuseum.com
8. Dear colleagues! You can see beatiful miniature of 'For merit before Lithuania' order - 25x13 mm, gold, silver, cold enamel, hand engraving by Nikita Koval'chuk (Vinnitsa, Ukraine). Rare!

10. Hi, I managed to get something very very rare.... I got two pictures with forest brother from Estonia. I will get his name as well coming days I hope! Especially nice find because my grandfather was one of them (catched 1949 and killed by KGB) Some information from wikipedia: The Forest Brothers also: Brothers of the Forest, Forest Brethren; Forest Brotherhood; Estonian: metsavennad, Latvian: me?a brāļi, Lithuanian: mi?ko broliai) were Estonian, Latvian, and Lithuanian partisans who waged guerrilla warfare against Soviet rule during the Soviet invasion and occupation of the three Baltic states during, and after, World War II. The Soviet Army occupied the formerly independent Baltic states in 1940?1941 and, after a period of German occupation, again in 1944?1945. As Stalinist repression intensified over the following years, more than 170,000 residents of these countries used the heavily-forested countryside as a natural refuge and basis for armed anti-Soviet resistance. Resistance units varied in size and composition, ranging from individually operating guerrillas, armed primarily for self-defence, to large and well-organised groups able to engage significant Soviet forces in battle. In Estonia total 14,000 - 15,000 men participated in fighting during 1944-1953. Estonian Forest Brothers were most active in V?ru County and border areas between P?rnu County and L??ne County, and between Tartu County and Viru County. During period November 1944 - November 1947 they made 773 armed attacks and killed about 1000 Soviets and their supporters. August Sabbe, the last surviving Forest Brother in Estonia, was discovered by KGB agents in 1978, he was posing as a fisherman, instead of surrendering, he jumped into a river and hooked himself to a log, drowning. The KGB contested this story however.
11. Latvian-made medal to the International military exercise . International military exercise Baltic Eagle 2003 begins [16 Sep 2003] Today, 16 September, the international military exercise Baltic Eagle 2003 will commence at the Adazi Mobile Infantry Training Centre (MITC). Around 350 servicemen and women from Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Denmark, Sweden, Poland and Great Britain will be taking part. Representatives from NATO Multinational Corps North East Headquarters will be participating in the exercise as observers. Their reports, along with conclusions, will be passed on to NATO Central Command. Commander of Latvia's Land Forces, Colonel Juris Kiukucans, has been appointed to co-ordinate the exercise. The aim of Baltic Eagle 2003 is to enhance co-operation between staff officers from a diverse range of countries within a multinational environment, to a level in conformity with NATO staff procedures and standards. Particular attention will be paid during the exercise to operational planning and co-ordination at headquarters. Baltic Eagle has been held every year since 2000, previously also in Lithuania (2001) and Estonia (2002). With the BALTBAT (Baltic Battalion) project winding up, this is the last time Baltic Eagle will be held. Planning for this year's exercise began in October 2002. Ministry of Defence
12. Without wanting to offend our Belgium friends I wonder if it isn't better if there is a section for the Low Countries (Belgium, Netherlands etc) instead of a pure Belgium section. There are a lot of Dutch users and topics on this forum. The Netherlands just doesn't seem right in this section: Northern European & Baltic States: Non Communist Era For all Militaria, Orders, Medals & Decorations relating to the follwoing European (Non Communist) States: Dennmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Republic of Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Netherlands, Norway & Sweden.
