What is the difference between some of these and the small messdress ones?

And "sweetheart" brooch?

Is that like the "I shagged a pilot and all I got was this lousy T-Shirt" version at that time....??

Dunno,never seen a messdress version.

Err not exactly Chris :D They were given to wives/girlfriends as a token of love and I suppose it showed that the girl was "spoken for" and to keep any lecherous hands off her while the bloke was away shooting down baddies and the like.

I guess a "good shot" had a box of em ;-)

Someone somewhere posted he had bought an RFC sweetheart brooch, then discovered it was a rare mess dress badge.

Hmm interesting, never heard of a messdress piece...I reckon they would be a bit bigger than the sweethearts, look a bit of a poof with a 2 1/2 inch brooch on

Then again the Americans used a 2 inch set of wings for I believe the shirt?? http://www.germanmilitaria.com/OtherNation...os/C004456.html

Most definitely there was a small metal RFC wing used for Mess Dress, same pattern as the 1913-14 wing but in miniature. The sweetheart RFC wings do not follow the official pattern of the wing. The Mess wing was usually pin back on a bar hinge but I also have an unusual one with twin loops on the back through which a small cotter pin would be attached, much like a cap badge.
