    "The Awards and Decorations were authorized in May 2001, for Kosovo Police Service. The procedures for nomination, approval, and authorization are contained in Kosovo Police Service Policy and Procedures Manual (P-1.36). This policy also dictates the manner in which these awards are to be worn by members of the Police Service while in uniform.

    Nothing contained herein should be construed as changing any provision or regulation that is in effect. The actual policy of Awards and Decorations is the ultimate authority.

    The unauthorized wearing of ribbons or decorations that depict any of the decorations authorized by the Kosovo Police Service is prohibited."

    The Medal of Honor

    The Medal of Honor is the highest award within the Kosovo Police Service. When the actual medal is worn, it is suspended from a ribbon which is worn around the neck.

    Latin Inscription: "Virtue and Honor"

    This medal is given under the following documented circumstances, which will be verified by investigators from the Office of Professional Standards:

    "...INDIVIDUAL ACTS OF EXTRAORDINARY BRAVERY AGAINST AN ARMED OPPONENT, PERFORMED IN THE LINE OF DUTY AT GREAT RISK OF ONE'S OWN LIFE, AND ABOVE AND BEYOND THE CALL OF DUTY"

    The Medal of Valor

    The Medal of Valor is the second highest award within the Kosovo Police Service. When the actual medal is worn, it is suspended from a ribbon which is worn around the neck.

    Latin Inscription: "For Valor"

    This medal is given under the following documented circumstances, which will be verified by investigators from the Office of Professional Standards:

    "...OUTSTANDING PERSONAL BRAVERY IN THE LINE OF DUTY AT IMMINENT PERSONAL HAZARD OR RISK. ... OR ARMED COMBAT ... OR OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT NOT INVOLVING ARMED COMBAT, BUT INVOLVING PERSONAL DANGER, CONDUCTED AT THE RISK OF ONE'S LIFE"

    The Police Shield medal

    The Police Shield medal is the third highest award within the Kosovo Police Service. When the actual medal is worn, it is suspended from a ribbon which is affixed above the left breast pocket of the uniform.

    Latin Inscription: "Faithful Unto Death"

    This medal is given under the following documented circumstances, which will be verified by investigators from the Office of Professional Standards:

    "...WHO SUFFERS SERIOUS PHYSICAL INJURY, OR DEATH, AS A CONSEQUENCE OF OFFICIAL POLICE OPERATIONS"

    The Lifesaving Medal

    The Lifesaving Medal is the fourth highest award within the Kosovo Police Service. When the actual medal is worn, it is suspended from a ribbon which is affixed above the left breast pocket of the uniform.

    Latin Inscription: "For Life"

    This medal is given under the following documented circumstances, which will be verified by investigators from the Office of Professional Standards:

    "...INTENTIONALLY SAVING, OR ATTEMPTING TO SAVE, THE LIFE OF ANOTHER, AT GREAT RISK TO THE OFFICER'S OWN LIFE"

    The Distinguished Service medal

    The Distinguished Service medal is the fifth highest award within the Kosovo Police Service. When the actual medal is worn, it is suspended from a ribbon which is affixed above the left breast pocket of the uniform.

    Latin Inscription: "Distinguished Acts"

    This medal is given under the following documented circumstances, which will be verified by investigators from the Office of Professional Standards:

    "...RENDERING CONSISTENTLY SUPERIOR AND DISTINGUISHED SERVICE OVER A LENGTHY PERIOD OF TIME ... USUALLY WHILE IN COMMAND OR A SENIOR SUPERVISORY POSITION"

    The Police Commendation medal

    The Police Commendation medal is the sixth award within the Kosovo Police Service. When the actual medal is worn, it is suspended from a ribbon which is affixed above the left breast pocket of the uniform.

    Latin Inscription: "For Meritorious Acts"

    This medal is given under the following documented circumstances, which will be verified by investigators from the Office of Professional Standards:

    "...FOR CLEARLY MERITORIOUS SERVICE WHILE EXHIBITING THE HIGHEST OF POLICE PROFESSIONALISM"

    The Faithful Service medal

    The Faithful Service medal is the seventh highest award within the Kosovo Police Service. When the actual medal is worn, it is suspended from a ribbon which is affixed above the left breast pocket of the uniform.

    Latin Inscription: "Always Faithful"

    This medal is given under the following documented circumstances, which will be verified by investigators from the Office of Professional Standards:

    "...FOR FAITHFUL SERVICE, OVER A PERIOD OF TEN OR MORE YEARS, DEMONSTRATING HIGH STANDARDS OF POLICE SERVICE AND PROFESSIONALISM"

    The Legion of Merit Medal

    The Legion of Merit Medal may be award to any person, who are not uniformed members of the Kosovo Police Service.

    "...FOR RECOGNITION OF SUSTAINED, VERIFIABLE, AND SIGNIFICANT MERITORIOUS CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE KPS, OR AN ACT OF HEROISM, OR PERSONAL INTERVENTION, WHICH IN AND OF ITSELF, IF PERFORMED BY A UNIFORMED MEMBER OF THE KPS, WOULD WARRANT THE AWARDING OF THE KPS MEDAL OF HONOR OR MEDAL OF VALOR..."
