I see no problems with this badge.

IMO it is an original sterling piece that was made in Japan.

The faults in the lines of longitude and latitude are typical of the individual hand finishing that can be seen on these pieces.

However,as much as i would like to have it i am not prepared to pay what these sterling marked badges are going for now.

I am perfectly happy with my incomplete and worn tombak example. :)

    Regards,Martin.

    Thanks for posting this Nick.

I find it very interesting and i do notice some design similarities in the oakleaves when compared with the badges.

Could you possibly translate the text on post #166 ?

    Much appreciated,Martin.

    Hi Martin,

in 1967 this ring was in one american collection.

According to the book it was made in silver in Japan. Although nothing is said about the exact place of manufacturing. It belonged to the member of the Thor.

+ info about tonnage of ships that were sunken by Thor during its two "cruises to Yokohama" and its destruction.

    Regards,

    Nick

Thanks for the translation Nick. ;)

Pity that there are not more detailed images of the ring, side views, etc.

Possibly,a private commission to a jeweler in Yokohama by a Thor crewman and maybe the same person/s who made the HK awards ??

Just speculation on my part, who knows ?

    Many thanks,Martin.

    Very unfortunate indeed!

No info about dimensions or marking either...

But it looks like on the left side of the ring we have "Thor" ;)

    Cheers,

    Nick

…or just only an item, which was made privately onboard the Thor, using any estranges materials?

Seriously, I still have doubts that every (any?) items are manufactured by any Japanese jeweler. There are enough items, who were handicraft by the sailors itself, e.g. while during on the sea (Iron Cross, etc.) or any other reason.

Especially for this unique items, there will be almost no 100% proof able comments about the manufacture or date, authenticity of fake, etc.

    Just my two cents.

    BR, Chris
