Hi Pete,

Just to follow up. The 4 grades were awarded to specific "classes" of individuals or position. It wasn't like an EK2-EK1-DKiG-RK transition. Normally only one of any of the 4 grades were presented only ONCE to one individual.

Dear Friends,

How many of the Chief Commander grade were actually awarded - during WW2 and alltogether?

The award criteria looks quite straight forward (Heads of military...) so I assume there are not too many (?). Are the awarded ones numbered or named (or both)?

Regards,

Jani

The price depends on the period of the piece. If you are looking for ccurrent issues then I would expect to pay less than what you are quoting. That is my opinion.....i dont think the quality is worth the money, and the fact that they are so readily available in the market adds to my thought. I have older pieces from the 70s back to the 50s. My Commanders is a Balfour piece form the 50s. I got that for less than what you are quoting below. Also have an older Chief Commander 60s or so, and a 70s + piece marked 12c. Not the best quality compared to the older piece, but is far above what you will find in a current issue Chief Commander grade. I would check out as many sites and dealers as you can, ebay as well to get a feel wor what folks are asking and for what period.....as with anything it is worth what youa re willing to pay and how much you want it.....Hope that doesnt muddy the waters too much.

My example of the 12c marked for reference...a nice piece, not as good quality as the riveted piece shown but IMO better than the current strikes. The gold finish is a polished mirror look vice a brushed finish, I never did favor the mirror look. Just another variation to look for in the Chief Commander series.

Do you have a scan of the back of this one?

I have one with the 12C marking but it is a riveted piece and may be from the 1950-60s.

Is there any gold in these?

Thanks,

    • Sounds great other than the Orange & Mango squash only because I prefer cran-pomegranate juice.
    • "(...) disgusting herbal concoction (...)" I took note of this description, to enrich my otherwise limited, English "Wortschatz"...
    • At work the standard indian tea such as PG tips is referred to as chimp tea. This goes back to the days when we had a Spanish girl working for us whose command of the English language was extremely limited. One lunch she said she was going to the shop could she get anything. I asked if she could get a pack of tea bags. She returned with some disgusting herbal concoction. I tried to explain what was required but without success. I then remembered PG tips had a picture of a chimpanzee on the packe
    • When I read Lapsang Souchong i decided to post something about these Tea . Many years ago I dont  know about Lapsang until I read James Michener book Centennial and the description of the savour of the Lapasang as a mix of tar and salt & smoked made me proof . It was exact ! and i liked it since then .
    • I have been known to drink Lapsang Souchong and Tea, Earl Grey, Hot... both "without pollutants". I normally have one mug of coffee in the morning, then spend the rest of the day drinking Orange & Mango squash (by the pint). Then evening comes and it's a pint, followed by red wine with dinner and sometimes a drop of Laphroaig afterwards.
