    Surely if wounded he would have been entitled to a wound badge.

    Actually, it's not that unusual.

    Going through a couple regimental/battalion and other award rosters, about 25-35% of enlisted men I reckon got only a state award-no EK2 for them. This was true even for front fighters (albeit rarer-maybe 15%).

    Huh. He was a wheelwright-- and per post #9 of page 13, per protest by his employers, the North German Brown Coal Works in Helmstedt, he was demobilized 13 September 1917 to return to his civilian occupation (essential to war production apparently) although fit for frontline service. The next page seems to show his exemption was only until 31.10.17... so what follows for 1918 entries?
