Jason Posted October 25, 2005 Posted October 25, 2005 Gday gents, just a simple question for those in the know...what was the criteria for the award of the Saxon Honour Cross with Swords and the Saxon "War Merit Cross"? I'm really starting to get into Saxon awards and would like to learn more! cheers Jason
Stogieman Posted October 25, 2005 Posted October 25, 2005 The only "stupid" question is the one you don't ask!The Honor Cross is a very odd Saxon award given primarily to NCO's. I've never seen specific citations on this puppy, but it is arather obscure piece. You'll find them, scarcer with swords....... one witha crown...... yep, keep dreaming!
Guest Rick Research Posted October 25, 2005 Posted October 25, 2005 Yup, the Ehrenkreuz mit X was given during the war to NCOs as a sort of "well, what ELSE are we going to give them?" gap filler between the lowly Friedrich August Medal in silver and the exalted St Henry Medals for insane bravery. The Saxon War Effort Cross's statutes state that it was to be awarded a) if no other Saxon WW1 award had previously been awarded ANDb) if some other Saxon WW1 award WAS later awarded, this should be returned.That's...IT!!!! Normally a war effort rear area type dingus, it DOES show up in the weirdest groups to frontline General Staff officers and other unfortunates apparently handed one because nothing else was immediately to hand! (I'm imagining the King or one of the Princes smiling thinly and hissing at an Adjutant "What do you MEAN we've handed everything else out today, Hoflos!? This guy is a Lieutenant Colonel of the General Staff-- he should get a nice shiny enamelled... oh &*#@ it then, give the *$#@& thing to me! ... HERE you are, my valiant and valued ally!")
Motorhead Posted October 25, 2005 Posted October 25, 2005 I don't know it's the right place to post, but have a look at this page-Lots of information about the Saxon orders, medals, cases ect.......but it's all in german!Michahttp://www.sachsens-orden.de.vu/
Ed_Haynes Posted October 25, 2005 Posted October 25, 2005 Way (WAY) outside my interests, but a really (REALLY) nice site. Thanks!
Stogieman Posted October 25, 2005 Posted October 25, 2005 The site is run by Herr Oswald G??wein..... Asuper guy, serious collector (as is his son). Nicht sprechen eengleesh though! if you look through his site, you'll see some very familiar Saxon stuff that used to live with me.
Dave Danner Posted October 25, 2005 Posted October 25, 2005 The only "stupid" question is the one you don't ask!"Isn't it morally wrong to give me a warning when, in fact, I was speeding?""Don't you think it is about time you audited my return?"
Mike Dwyer Posted October 25, 2005 Posted October 25, 2005 "Isn't it morally wrong to give me a warning when, in fact, I was speeding?""Don't you think it is about time you audited my return?"Officer, will you hold my beer while I look for my license?
Stogieman Posted October 25, 2005 Posted October 25, 2005 I think all of these fall out of the range of common stupidity and are well into the range of..."Paging Dr. Howard, Dr. Howard & Dr. Fine...."
Jason Posted October 25, 2005 Author Posted October 25, 2005 Thanks guys, this is a real help. There's just something about Saxon awards.....I suppose now I should put up my examples of these awards!!cheers Jason
Jason Posted October 26, 2005 Author Posted October 26, 2005 Thanks for the link to that site Micha, i'll start working my way through it tonight!cheers Jason
JensF. Posted October 26, 2005 Posted October 26, 2005 (edited) Here is my "Ehrenkreuz mit Schwertern". A really beautiful and very well made award! Sorry for the bad picture, it was made with my old crap scanner... Edited October 26, 2005 by JensF.
Stogieman Posted October 26, 2005 Posted October 26, 2005 Yep, one of Saxony's nice awards........ an "Einzel=Spange" w. No swords and a case just sold in germany recently for about 104- Euro. Not a bad price at all!
JensF. Posted October 26, 2005 Posted October 26, 2005 Sachsen was also one of only two countries (also Bavaria) were an NCO/enlisted soldier could get the most military awards. Golden Military St. Henry MedalSilver Military St. Henry MedalAlbert Cross with swordsHonor Cross with SwordsSilver Friedrich August MedalBronze Friedrich August MedalWar Merit CrossDid I forget something? In all other countries only the officers could get a "full chest". Did I forget something?
Stogieman Posted October 26, 2005 Posted October 26, 2005 Yep, he had to return the WMK if he received any other war-time decoration!Plus, while far-fetched, he could conceivably receive a Verdienst Orden Kreuz mit Schwertern....
Stogieman Posted October 26, 2005 Posted October 26, 2005 Now, just for fun, since we're on the subject:
JensF. Posted October 26, 2005 Posted October 26, 2005 Thanks. But how about the medal-bars with a WMC and FA-medals etc. you see sometimes?
Stogieman Posted October 26, 2005 Posted October 26, 2005 The FAM's were probably awarded pre-1914... remember, 1905-on and for military merit would still put it on the "war ribbon"
