Hello, I am also researching the Schleswig-Holsteinische Dragoner-Regiment Nr. 13. My Grandfather (Lt. Mueller) was part of this regiment and has left behind an amazing photo album of his time in Russia and France during the WWI. I have a reference to the book mentioned previously, but do not know how to obtain a copy. Any suggestions? Can you direct me to any other reference material that will help me understand the Regiment?

    Many thanks,

    Sonya Tietjen

I'm afraid not. My grandfather was Louis Hermann Wilhelm Otto Mueller, born in Braunsweig in 1890, died in Bremen in 1940. I have since found some information on his regiment from the US archives: http://www.vlib.us/wwi/resources/germanarmywwi.html I've narrowed down his division to one of 3 (234th, 235th or 236th) and have pieced together his 1918 movements on the western front, but have not tracked down anything for his time on the eastern front in 1915 - his photos only say "Russland 1915".

I did find the book in Germany, and have just spent a small fortune to purchase and ship it over. My Father will translate the relevent sections for me.

The Prussian: Do you know the name of the volunteer whose picture you sent?

The picture attached is of his regiment in early 1918 - my Grandfather is on the far right.

Is it possible to get copies of these books?

I am also researching the Schleswig-Holstein Dragoon No. 13. My Grandfather Hermann Gertz was part of this Calvary unit in 1904. We have his military stein indicating he was stationed in Metz. I also have 2 photos of my Grandfather in his military uniform. I would be very happy to find out about this unit at the time he was part of it. And if there are other photos of this unit when they were in Metz in 1904-1907. My Grandfather came to the United States in 1908.

Thank you for any help or information you can give.

    Hallo Jens!

Mein Deutsch ist sehr schlect. :(

Sorry. Thank you very much for the links. I will check the links later today. I really appreciate your reply. If I find my Grandfather that would be wonderful. Then I would share my discovery with my cousins in Germany. :D

The history for Dragoner-Regiment Nr. 13 is among the better you can find, although the Ehrenliste is not very detailed. I picked up a copy for a very good price about a year ago. The book was distributed with an errtum slip and a loose one-page not from the editor. In it he states that 500 copies of the book had been published at a cost of 12 RM each but were being made available for only 8 RM, with the officer's association covering the difference.

I am hoping to visit Metz this fall. This is where my grandfather Hermann Gertz was garrisoned in 1904 while with the S-H Dragoon Nr. 13. Can anyone tell me if there is anything left there of the Dragoon that I could see?

Thank you for any comments or suggestions.

The Dragonerkaserne is still there, in Borny, a suburb east of Metz about a mile and a half from the Metz city center. It was a caserne for the French Army until 1990, but now serves as the Campus Bridoux of the University of Metz. On the good side, that means you probably go inside and look around. On the bad side, that means there is likely nothing in terms of monuments or plaques there. But at least you can see the buildings themselves.

Here is a Google Earth image:

    Dave,

I did find some information on the Metz German Imperial District with buildings built by the Kaiser. For example the railway station, the post office and so forth. The Temple Neuf was inaugurated in 1904 when my grandfather was garrisoned there. I found all this in a web site called French Moments www.frenchmoments.eu/metz-german-imperial-district/

However I did not find the actual area my grandfather was garrisoned at until your post. THANK YOU!!! I am making note of it and will put the Campus Bridoux on the list of places to visit. It does not matter that there would be no mention of the Dragoon there. Just knowing that was the spot my grandfather stayed will be enough for me.

    Thanks again!
