Is the design printed in ink or paint rather than embroidered?

As indicated above, it could be a "blazer badge" for wear in civilian clothes, but it's very basic for such an item which would normally be in coloured embroidery & / or bullion, & an RAF blue rather than black or dark blue backing does'nt seem likely for a blazer badge.

    What are its measurements please?

It looks like an early screen print, and it is 5.75 in high by 4.5 in at its widest points.

Sorry to possibly disapoint you but this is a normal patch made to be worn on civilian clothing.

i am not disappointed by anything, just looking for an answer to what it is, I am quite surprised it has survived at all.

A basic printed design around which the bullion embroidery would be stiched i.e. to show where it goes.

The Germans also used a paper template for their bullion embroidery.
