Definately not a period piece. If I remember correctly ( hard to do ) There was

a big discussion over at WAF concerning a 1914 cross with this style pin system

and I was thought to be used on 1957 era replacement crosses.

Well, enough said that I also didn't like it from the beginning... What it disturbs me most is the fact that if I would sell or pass on such a piece I would stir a vesps' nest. Some dealers sell those things in a couple of minutes during the Friday's update... go and figure... That's a strange world.

    Ciao,

$3100 is a LOT of money even for a GOOD 1870 Ek1. I just saw an ebay auction for a

1914 Godet with side hooks with a starting bid of $1100. I thought there was a recession

    going on.

I'll throw in a slightly different point of view. Sure, it does not appear to be from one of the main 1870s manufacturers but I see 2 really good things going for it - the hardware looks high quality to me, certainly not 57er in any way shape or form. I do not recall seeing anything really close in 1914 examples either and to me it does not really look 20s/30s. The other point is the core - it looks like cast iron to me, indicating earlier rather than later manufacturer. The on thing I'd want to be sure of is that the frames are solid silver and not plated - hard to be certain from the pics. At a guess, I'd suggest circa 1900 +-10 years based on construction.

    Regards

    Mike

I went back looking at old threads and found what I thought was the same style pin system.

I was WRONG in saying that this was a '57 style pin although they look (roughly) similar

they are definately not the same. I apologise for jumping to conclusions.

That being said----I still don't like this cross.

    57 style pin system---

I was just comparing the above cross against actual 1870 period models and it does appear to be a close match, not 100% but at least 95%. The pin is a little off but the hinge is the same type used on period models.

The crown is also a very close match to examples posted in Previtera's book.

Is there a recession ? You wouldn't think so if you watch the items rapidly disappear from the famous Friday update, incredible.
