Say Hallo to LtdR Arnold Kuschel

    Recommended Posts

But Wait, the story isn´t over yet !!!

LtDr Arnold Kuschel didnt end up as a Bookseller in Hamburg in 1939, the last document I got is this paper dated 13th December 1942 and now he is Hauptmann ( new rank in 1941-42? ) belonging to Gren. Ers Batl 492, if the info I found is rightthis unit ended up in Poland in 1945. In this doc it looks like Herr Kuschel is in Hospital again !! maybe wounded for the sixth time :speechless1:

I havent found him in any search for war dead so maybe he survived even the second WW ?

Probably he would have an EK II 1939 or a KVK ? to his other medals

Now I only wish to get a picture of him so I could see how this tough soldier looked like.

    Hope you like the story.

In 40+ years collecting I have NEVER seen a 1918 Gold Wound Badge document-- and you have TWO to the same man! :jumping::jumping::jumping::cheers:

"Some Major" on the preliminary one in post #15 was freshly minted (17.6) Pour le Merite winner Albrecht Steppuhn (1877-1955), as General der Infanterie commanding Home Establishment of XII. Army Corps 1939-43. :catjava:

The SECOND one was signed by Pour le Merite winner Oberst (aD that rank) Eckhart von Loeben (1868-1947).

Kuschel's EK2 document was signed by later-Generalmajor aD Franz von Netzer (1864-1946-- KO2X and HOH3X).

Note also that Steppuhn's version of the GWB document says your Leutnant was "FORMERLY of Inf Rgt 128." They must have expected he would never return after what may have been his final wound of the war...

The 1919 Reichsheer documents are from the "Provisional" in the barracks shining their boots army-- string bean shoulder cords, rank on cuff stripes. Kuschel was obviously being considered (!) for the final core cadre of the 100,000 man Reichsheer of 1920, but didn't make the cut.

The 1939 attestation of his Bulgarian Order was signed by Oberst aD Kurt von Hohendorff (1870-1944: HOH3X, SMK).

Don't know who the "Kempe" who signed the Hindenburg Cross was, though.o

Have you got a scan of his medal bar? Because his ribbon bar device for the Bulgarian Order is, from crown and Xs, indeed the "BO5XmKr." The German references to "Tapfekeitskreuz für Offiziere"-- are wrong. The Bravery ORDER had no silver crown.

I think you need to find the WW1 regimental history of IR 128.

The 1942 document was signed by a Hauptmann "Skowronnek."

    Christer,

An amazing group! I really hope you can complete it!

I think i know the medal bar you are referring to on ebay.de.....but would Arnold's medal bar not have the Bulgarian Bravery Decoration awarded in 1919(?) on it before the Hungarian Commemorative medal awarded to him in 1934? It is this way on the ribbon bar.

    Kind regards

    Matt

But does she have to "open" the auction at all? I have won stuff on German eBay that was only for sale inside Germany itself. If the seller agrees to ship it to Sweden it shouldn't be a problem, whatever the auction text says.

    • 2 years later...

I have search the Internet for more info about Hr arnold Kuschel and I found some :jumping: :jumping:

It took me two years but now I have most of his military career

Born in Hamburg April 26th 1897 he started the war as Kriegsfreiwilliger in 1914 only 17 years old in Inf Rgt 128

Then after only just entered the war he was reported Vermisst (missing in Action) 3rd Jan 1915 i Danzig Langfuhr.

As we now he survived the War so he must have been found wounded for the first time.

In August 1915 Arnold Kuschel was Unteroffizier in 6 Komp and 23rd August 1915 he was wounded for the second time now at Dollstädt (East Prussia)

Another War year goes by and we Find Arnold as Vizefeldwebel in 8 Komp , and again at 4th December 1916 he was wounded for the third time also at the Dollstädt area.

With three wounds he would have been awarded a woundbadge in Silber if that had been instituted in 1916, but our young hero went on fighting and in 24th March 1917 he got he 4th wound, this time light wounded says the archive.......

Hes promotion to LtdR was gazetted in Militär Wochenblatt 31 Aug 1918 but already in beginning of July when he got his woundbadge in Gold :speechless1: for 5 wounds he was written as LtdR Arnold Kuschel. So he must have been wounde a 5th time between March 1917 and Summer 1918 ( why am I not suprised )

But the top of the story is the Document from December 1942 where he is adressed as Hauptmann Z V Arnold Kuschel belonging to Gren Erz Btl 492.

So he was in the second World War and when the doc was written he was in Hospital !! Wounded for what time ??

I havent found him in any grave register from WW II so I guess he survived even that.

If anyone have or know of a Rgt story for Inf Rgt 128 I would be super pleased to find it .

Some stories is just better than movies and fiction

I found out some more :cheeky:

He was titled Kaufmann in 1935 when he got his EhrenKreuz füf Frontkämpfer (well earned)

Then I found him in the Hamburg Phone book :jumping: All the way from 1920s to 1941 .... then he is lost from the phone book until 1949 !! Maybe he was in Soviet as a POW 1945-1949 ?

    the search goes on
