TerryG Posted October 10, 2009 Posted October 10, 2009 Demir and all collectors of Turkish War Medals, I think some of you can make a connection between the style of a Tugra and the manufacturer. Go on then! 1
Ulsterman Posted October 10, 2009 Posted October 10, 2009 Top right is the Turkish made type? Great thread with ground-breaking article potential. :jumping:
Mike Huxley Posted October 10, 2009 Posted October 10, 2009 (edited) Bottom left is a "Godet" of Berlin made piece. Top second from left "BB&Co" piece Edited October 10, 2009 by Mike Huxley
TerryG Posted October 10, 2009 Author Posted October 10, 2009 (edited) Thanks Guys. These are from my collection and only 2 are maker-marked: Top row, 1st left is AWS and 2nd is BB&Co. The last on the right is indeed a painted one, the so-called Turkish made. The bottom left is not marked so I am interested to read your comment about Godet. I know Demir has a great collection of these so I hope he will be able to chip-in although he is far from his home and collection right now. Come on everyone, get your Turkish stars out! Claudius Posted October 14, 2009 Posted October 14, 2009 Here are two TMW Tugras, to the same gent. This is the "BB&Co" one
Claudius Posted October 14, 2009 Posted October 14, 2009 here is the turkish version. It is also enamelled, but not as high of quality.
Ulsterman Posted October 14, 2009 Posted October 14, 2009 Thtat's not a turkish maker mark-it is the tughra itself pressed into the back.
Claudius Posted October 14, 2009 Posted October 14, 2009 Thtat's not a turkish maker mark-it is the tughra itself pressed into the back. I beg your pardon? Can you explain, or is there a thread that discusses this further...
saschaw Posted October 14, 2009 Posted October 14, 2009 I beg your pardon? Can you explain, or is there a thread that discusses this further... A thread? If you have the star in hand, please turn it around and you'll realize. ;)
Claudius Posted October 15, 2009 Posted October 15, 2009 A thread? If you have the star in hand, please turn it around and you'll realize. I'm not sure I understand your statement. Do you mean that the impression in the back is the same, but concave, of the Tugra image on the front? The shape doesn't line-up correctly. I don't believe the impression made into the back of the TWM is the negative mold image of the Sultan signature (Tugra) from the front. Is this what you meant?
saschaw Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 Is this what you meant? Right, that's what I meant. And I think it is right - unless someone who speaks Ottoman says it means something else. ;)
Guest Rick Research Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 It is far easier-- and simpler-- to identify makers by patterns under the enamel and the edges of the star itself than for any of us to "read" what unfortunately look like anatomical sections of a snail and a partially developed egg turning into a chicken. :speechless1:
TerryG Posted October 17, 2009 Author Posted October 17, 2009 Please compare it: Uwe Are there some letters on the left? Here is the back of a similar Star. The large mark is not as clear. So, what is it then?

True- BUT as some of these were multipiece construction, the Tughra may also give a clue as to "parts" used. This is obscure to be sure, but nontheless, may be a useful clue.
speedytop Posted October 17, 2009 Posted October 17, 2009 Hi Terry, the left part of the picture in my Post (12) is reflected. Without reflection you can see, that it is the same indentation on your TWM, but only a part: Uwe
TerryG Posted October 17, 2009 Author Posted October 17, 2009 (edited) What are these letters? And can you also please show a full shot of the back with the pin/catch. Edited October 17, 2009 by TerryG
demir Posted October 18, 2009 Posted October 18, 2009 (edited) THANK YOU TERRY, LOVELY TOPIC. AS YOU SAY I AM STILL AWAY FROM HOME BUT I USED THE PICTURES IN MY LAPTOP AND ALSO USED THE PICTURES POSTED BY GMIC FRIENDS (THANKS). I WILL TRY TO UPLOAD THE TWMs BY DIFFERENT MANUFACTURERS GIVING THEIR NAMES AND "TUGRA"s AND REVERSES. PLEASE SEE THAT THE BASE ENAMEL DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE MANUFACTURERS. ALSO NOTICE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN TWMs MADE BY THE SAME MANUFACTURER. CHECK THE DIFFERENCES IN BB&Co. AND OTHER MANUFACTURES TUGRAS AND "EL GAZI" SIGNS. I HOPE THIS WILL HELP.
