    Radmilo,

Can you explain the symbolism on the republic of Croatia issue?

    Paul

    Paul,

Those coats of arms in the middle of the trefoil are also part of the official coat of arms of the Republic of Croatia today, from left to right:

-This coat of arms is considered to be the oldest Croatian coat of arms, it was used by Hungarian rulers of Croatia.

-Coat of arms of Dubrovnik, originally Hungarian as well, simplified version of the Arpad dynasty coat of arms.

-Coat of arms of Dalmatia granted and confirmed by Holy Roman emperor Sigismund.

-Coat of arms of Istria, originates from the March of Istria coat of arms.

-Coat of arms of Slavonia, officially granted by king Ladislaus Jagiello

When it comes to trefoil itself or Croatian Trefoil I think that it was first officially used during NDH as the symbol of the Croatian Home Guards, it could be seen on banners, shoulder boards and collars of officers and NCOs. Iron Trefoil was the highest decoration of NDH and the same design was used for Order of the Crown of King Zvonimir (shown above). Symbol was also used by NDH Air Force.

Although there are some claims that it was used during Austro-Hungarian rule as far as I know it was never officially introduced. It was sometimes worn on uniforms of the Home Guard during ceremonies but then again this was not exclusively Croatian custom. This official symbol of NDH was introduced again by Croatian president Franjo Tuđman in 1995 as the Order of Croatian Trefoil (shown above).
